This week was a intriguing week of rising and falling teams, especially in the top 10.  First, let's take a look at the AP Top 10.

Last Week

1.  Florida

2.  Texas

3.  Alabama

4.  LSU

5.  Va. Tech

6.  Boise St.

7.  USC 7

8.  Cincinnati 10

9.  Ohio St. 9

10.  TCU 11

I do not have an issue with the top 3 teams, more with the order of them.  Clearly the team that has proved the most "this year" is Alabama.  With a convincing win over then, #7 Virginia Tech.  None of the top 3 teams has even played a ranked team yet, so why not have the team that has done the most thus far at #1?

LSU at #4 is the same even though they have again, escaped a possible defeat.  This is where it gets interesting. Virginia Tech and Boise State flopped this week.Virginia Tech has looked impressive this year, but in struggling with Duke, they move up a spot in the polls.  What?  Yes, Boise St. struggled with I-AA UC Davis, but why the flip-flop?

Moving on.  USC stays at #7 even with a convincing win over then #24 California.  Cincinnati finally gets some recognition and moves within the top 10 to #8.  Finally, Ohio St. stands pat while TCU moves up one spot to #10.

I do not understand the way the voters determine their polls each week.  It seems that there is a lot of voting going on based upon team potential and past reputation.  Florida and Texas have yet to play a ranked team.  While Virginia Tech has played three, USC two and LSU, Boise State, and Ohio St. each have played one.

Yes, Florida and Texas have a lot of future potential, but have yet to show it.  Florida hung around with, a mediocre at best, Tennessee team and Texas flirted with, already two loss, Texas Tech.

Boise State by no means deserves to be in the top 10.  I'm from Idaho and I still believe this.  They beat Oregon early in the year, yes, but have not played anyone else of importance.  Yes, year in and year out they have 10 wins, but if you put them in a major conference where their schedule is more difficult, they may win 8 wins every year and not factor in to the national picture.  But, based solely on this season they do not deserve their top 10 ranking.

USC and Virginia Tech despite their one loss have shown that they can get up for big games and win those big games.  Cincinnati may not have played much competition yet, but they have looked very impressive in their victories and are finally being recognized for it this week.

Ohio State again lost in a big match up. Beat up on inferior Ohio teams and Big 10 foes.  Like they do every year.  Boasting a good record and again will be in the top 10 all year.  Win the Big 10.  Make a BCS bowl.  Where they will fall on their face to a faster, more athletic Pac-10 or SEC team.  TCU rounds out the top 10, like Boise State, because of a good record in a weak conference.

Voters need to make their picks based on what has happened in this season alone.  Not on reputation from previous seasons or how good they could possibly be this year.  This slotting into the top 10 makes for a bad precedent, that will be hard to undo in the future.  If Boise State and TCU run the table yet there are more impressive teams that deserve to be ranked higher, how are the going to drop these two teams after starting them so high.  If the voters base their picks on this year and this year alone, the overall ranking system may be more accurate than ever.
