New York Mets' 2009 Season Disaster Finally Ending

The 2009 version of the New York Mets will finally disappear into oblivion this weekend. And I can’t wait for them to go away. There’s a chance for the team to wind up losing 94 games this season, the most losses since the Art Howe-era 2003 team that finished with 95 losses. In a dreadful season, it’s worth taking a look at some past horrible seasons.

Sure, the Mets announced that they’re lowering ticket prices for next season. But don’t mistake that move as benevolence on the part of Mets ownership based on the torturous team they subjected us to this season. Reducing tickets prices is actually a calculated move to fill more seats for more games to meet revenue goals. The team likely didn’t meet their revenue goals for Pity (Citi) Field this season. So they used mathematical projections to determine the most likely pricing scheme to deliver their goals based on price/attendance correlation. Thanks Mr. Wilpon.

It’s interesting to look at the teams that were worse than the 2009 Mets:

• 1962-1967
• 1977-1980
• 1982
• 1993
• 2003

Clearly, from looking at that list, the 2009 Mets were one of the worst in team history. I guess the only good news from this season is that the Nationals are so bad that the Mets won’t finish in last place in the NL East. The injuries were a big factor, but no matter how you slice it this was one of the worst teams to watch that I can remember.

There are many Mets players on this year’s roster that I’m looking forward to never seeing in a Mets uniform again like: Wilson Valdez, Brian Schneider, Anderson Hernandez, Carlos Delgado, Gary Sheffield, Jeremy Reed, J.J. Putz, Elmer Dessens, Sean Green, Lance Broadway, Pat Misch, and Tim Redding. That’s half of the Mets active roster.

I didn’t include Jerry Manuel on that list, although he does wear a uniform. He just didn’t have enough to work with this season to make an accurate judgment about him. But Razor Shines can go and Dan Warthen is on thin ice. I won’t even get into Omar Minaya right now. That’s a whole other discussion.

Here’s hoping for a better 2010 for the Mets. It’s hard to imagine how it could be worse.
