Husker kickoff specialist Adi Kunalic is good at what he does. There's no question about that. The Bosnian-born kicker recruited three years ago out of Fort Worth, Texas has hit 51.6 percent of his kickoffs this year for touchbacks. His 16 touchbacks put him in a tie for the nations lead.
Its obvious that Kunalic has a tremendously strong leg and could possibly be the starting kicker on most other teams in the nation. However, Adi has only one field goal attempt in his Husker career.
The roadblock?
Nebraska also Has Alex Henery. One of the best kickers in the nation.
Kunalic and Henery are both juniors. Henery walked onto the program the same year that Kunalic was awarded a scholarship.
I know what you are thinking. What's the point of all this?
I think that it would be in the best interest of the program and Kunalic's future if The Huskers were to redshirt Kunalic for next season.
This would give Kunalic one year to showcase his skills not only as a kickoff specialist, but as a field goal kicker. He might catch the eye of some scouts and make some serious coin in the NFL.
This would also fill what would appear to be a glaring need for the Huskers in the 2011 season.
Even if they were to recruit someone within that time, chances are they wouldn't be able to find someone who possesses the type of leg strength displayed by Kunalic.
I would love to see Adi redshirt next season and get his shot in 2011. Until then Ill be saying Adi-os with the rest of the fans as we watch his kickoffs sail through the back of the endzone for the rest of the year.
