After things settled down on serve, Kerber moved into a 5-2 lead in the opening set. Williams used a break and a hold to move closer to the German, but the No. 4 seed was able to close out the set on serve.

A pair of unforced errors cost Williams her first service game of the second set. With a break in hand, Kerber calmed down on serve to take command of the match.

Kerber finished off the match with a stellar forehand winner from the left baseline. The German had 17 winners and 11 unforced errors in two sets, while Williams had 24 winners and 21 unforced errors.

The 2016 Australian Open champion will face No. 1 Serena Williams, who she beat in the final in Melbourne, on Saturday in the ladies' final.
