Chicago Cubs Success: Echoes of 1908

As a Cubs fan growing up, I kept hearing about how the Cubs would not win another World Series until the year 2008, in their 100 year anniversary.  Now that the year has come, and the Cubs look like a team of destiny, I'm beginning to believe it.

The last time the Cubs had the best record in the majors at the beginning of June was in that famous year of 1908.  The last time the Cubs led in 22 straight games like the streak they are currently on was over 70 years ago.  The last time the Cubs had this great of a home start was back in the day as well.

On May 30th, the Cubs came back from 8 runs down, something that has only been accomplished by them three times in the history of Wrigley Field.  There is just something different about this year's club.

When your former crappy closer is now a dominating starter, and your former injury-plagued starter is now your pretty good closer, you know something special is happening.

When your starting catcher is going to become the first rookie catcher ever to start in the All-Star Game, you know something special is happening.

When you start booing a player for bad performance and he responds with 30 RBIs in the month of May, you know something special is happening.

The Cubs lead the majors in runs scored and OBP.  They are 2nd in the National League in E.R.A. They are set to fill probably about a third of the National League Roster at Yankee Stadium at the All-star game.

Maybe this is it.  Only time will tell.  It certainly could just end up being another chapter in the misery book of the Chicago Cubs.

But the players don't feel that way and you can tell.  They are on a mission.  They believe the year has arrived.  They believe nothing can stop them.

I'm beginning to believe it too.

The Patriots go undefeated then lose in the final game, the Lakers and Celtics play in the NBA Finals, and the Chicago Cubs win the World Series 100 years later....what a great year in sports.
