Jamie McMurray is believed to have to come to a “basic agreement” for next year with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

A source within the team has suggested McMurray will sign a contract to race for the #1 team, which became vacant after Martin Truex Jr. secured a seat at Michael Waltrip Racing’s new #56 team.

This comes only a fortnight after current Roush Fenway satellite team Yates Racing announced a merger with Richard Petty Motorsports, and with RPM retaining 3 of their drivers, and Yates keeping Paul Menard. This left no room for McMurray, in what was believed to have been his most likely option after being dumped by Roush due to NASCAR’s four-team rule.

Aric Almirola was also strongly linked with the drive, but this agreement looks to have ended any possible hopes of landing a ride with EGR.
