Mountain West Conference In Need Of Expansion?
I recently came across an article about the Boise State Broncos joining the Mountain West Conference in an effort to strengthen their push for an automatic BCS bid and found this preposterous. Boise State undoubtedly is among the top teams that can break into the BCS on any given year, but why would the MCW choose to expand without the stipulation/guarantee of an automatic bid? This would only make it harder for a MWC team to finish the season undefeated which it's members are unreasonably expected to do in order to be 'allowed' to play in a BCS game.
As much as I thought this idea crazy, it got me thinking of other possibilities for expansion given an automatic bid. Some of the teams that immediately popped into my head were Fresno State (which always seams to play BCS teams down to the wire), and Houston (one Heisman winner 1989, and another in the running this season), in addition to Boise State.
Adding these three teams would give the conference two teams in California, and Texas which are strong areas for the conference to recruit. In addition it would allow the conference to play a conference championship game in the mold of the Big 12 and SEC. All of this of course would only make sense if the BCS would take this conference seriously and get rid of one of the 'at large' bids that the MWC teams have to fight for.
The MWC in my opinion is already better than the Big East without any of these changes but somebody needs to start making some noise and proposals to right this terrible injustice.
