I am very pleased to say that Mariano Rivera is having perhaps the best season of his illustrious career. Maybe it's the fact that he now has the security of being able to retire officially now in the Pinstripes and has peace of mind.
The one thing I will not do is credit Joe Girardi for Mariano's success. Did Girardi catch Mo at his peak and does he know him intimately? Yes and yes. The one thing that cannot be overlooked is the fact that Joba Chamberlain up until tonight was setting up for him and protecting his innings. Now, that he is gone, it'll be interesting to see if Mo plateaus off because he doesn't have a comparable reliever to bounce some pressure off of. I will say this again: Joba Chamberlain should be in the bullpen hands down!
Joba Chamberlain is going to be coddled in the rotation and if he faces any trouble he'll get pulled quickly. In the bullpen Joba faced many situations in the late innings and proved masterful in the clutch. He has the best slider in the game and he works off of his fastball better than most 22 year olds could ever dream of. He has given Mo the night off a few times and he could save Mariano Rivera for even 4 more years.
