Newcastle United: Will They Compete Next Season?

Andrew McNairMay 30, 2008

Newcastle United's turnaround was one of the highlights of the English Premier League season. Mid-table mediocrity under Sam Allardyce was followed by an alarming dip in form under the "Messiah," Kevin Keegan.

Luckily for Newcastle fans the world over, with the relegation zone in sight, Newcastle's overpaid and lacklustre squad got their act together and started picking up points.

The change was breathtaking as Newcastle took on the form of a dangerous side, freely scoring goals with England's Michael Owen spearheading a frightening three man attack with Obafemi Martins and Mark Viduka.

Owen himself has stated "He (Keegan) has had a massive impact." Newcastle's style in the latter stages of the campaign it must be said, had Keegan written all over it.

Their seven game undefeated spell starting in mid March saw Newcastle pick up 15 points and save the club from an embarrassing relegation dog fight and into a secure 12th position.

Defeats to Chelsea (2-0) and Everton (3-1), in the final two games proved things were yet far from rosey on Tyneside, so what do they have to do before they line up in August?

Kevin Keegan seems pretty happy with the base he has at St James', but admits signings must be made.

Two names on his apparent shortlist played in the recent UEFA Cup Final. Firstly Steven Davis, who is currently on loan at Rangers from Fulham. The nippy midfielder is hoping to secure a move north of the border but would struggle to ignore interest from the Magpies.

Davis has failed to convince me of his overall quality this season, especially his final ball but he'd definitely add to the Newcastle squad.

Secondly, Carlos Cuellar has been named in some people's European team of the year and it's amazing the Spaniard will not be lining up at Euro 2008.

The Scottish writers player of the year will have a hefty price tag on his head as Rangers look to build for the future. A price of around 10 million would be difficult to ignore and he is more than worth it!

Another player on the lips of the Newcastle media is 25 year old midfielder, Achille Emana. The Cameroon international currently plies his trade in the French Ligue1 but is ready to link up with international team mate, Geremi.

Are any of these players likely to lift Newcastle from mid-table and help challenge for a UEFA Cup spot? I personally, have my doubts.

More importantly than that, the Magpies must hold onto Obafemi Martins and Michael Owen if they want to take any important steps next season.

Selling your best players is not the mark of a successful club and it is imperative that Newcastle hold onto these talents if they are to be taken seriously by other clubs and perspective signings.

I wish Kevin Keegan the best of luck in building a winning side for next season where I hope to see Newcastle back fighting amongst England's elite!
