Manchester United's triumphant return to European football in February wasn't quite as Louis van Gaal had planned.

The Red Devils made the not-so-glamorous trip to FC Midtjylland on Thursday for the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie and were dealt the devastating blow early on of an injury to David De Gea in the warm-up...

Added to Wayne Rooney's absence, United fans were cursing their luck...

Thankfully for Van Gaal's side, De Gea's replacement Sergio Romero more than held his own...

And Memphis Depay bundled the ball home after half an hour to put the visitors in front...

It was all going smoothly for the English side until Pione Sisto fired in a leveller as the first half expired...

And though Romero's form continued into the second spell, Manchester United fell behind after 77 minutes when Paul Onuachu struck to complete the turnaround...

Attention soon turned where it always does: Louis van Gaal himself...

And the Dutchman watched on as Midtjylland held their lead until the full-time whistle...

At least it wasn't all bad for United fans—oh, wait...
