Chelsea warmed up for their return to Champions League action on Tuesday with a 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Eden Hazard returned to the starting lineup, while Diego Costa became the latest Blues star to don a face mask after breaking his nose in training earlier in the week:

It didn't take long for Chelsea to find the breakthrough, with Willian playing in Costa in the fifth minute, the Spain international finishing well:

Pedro Rodriguez didn't have to wait long to get on the scoresheet, as he capitalised on a sloppy Rolando Aarons pass to double the Blues' lead in the ninth minute:

It was the worst possible start for Steve McClaren's Newcastle:

Only 17 minutes were on the clock when Cesc Fabregas picked out Costa's run, the striker in turn feeding Willian to score from close range:

Two Newcastle legends weren't happy with what they were seeing:

Chelsea's evening was given a slight dampener when John Terry was forced off with an injury before half-time following a clash with Aleksandar Mitrovic:

The home side made it 4-0 when Pedro scored his second following another searching Fabregas pass:

Chelsea scored fifth after 83 minutes, when substitute Bertrand Traore met Cesar Azpilicueta's cross to net his first Premier League goal:

Andros Townsend got one back for the visitors with a powerful finish from just outside the box in the 90th minute, but it was a mere consolation, as Chelsea secured a comfortable 5-1 win:
