According to a press release, last Saturday's super mega return fight of the last American pound for pound fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Juan Manuel Marquez, did one million Pay Per View buys in their welterweight fight.
This was the highest performing pay per view boxing fight in 2009 and generated $52M in pay per view revenue: 525,000 from cable homes and 475,000 from satellite homes.
This is only the fifth time in boxing history that a non heavyweight fight has reached the one million mark. Floyd has reached the million mark twice in his career.
Mayweather vs. Marquez will be replayed this Saturday, Sept. 26 at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT on HBO. The 12-round unanimous decision triumph by Mayweather will be paired with the live heavyweight title fight featuring Vitali Klitschko and Cristobal Arreola from Los Angeles.
If you thought Money May would get quiet and humble after not selling out the MGM Grand last weekend I think he has plenty to boast about now that these numbers are released. The last American pound for pound super star of boxing is back. Whether you want to admit it or not the numbers do not lie.
