Arby Fields is one of the most explosive players on the Northwestern offense, but his touches have been limited the past two games. He struggled mightily in the game against Eastern Michigan and played sparingly against Syracuse.
He didn't get as many touches as most fans would like in that game due to concerns about pass protection. NU dug themselves an early 17-0 hole, and the coaching staff is far more comfortable with Jacob Schmidt as a blocker.
Fields only got two carries in that game but did have an impressive 25-yard run.
Jeravin Matthews will also be back for this game after suffering an ankle injury against Towson. While Schmidt is a solid short yardage back, both of these youngsters have big play potential. NU needs to take advantage of that any way they can.
Fields and Matthews are listed as the starting kick returners on the depth chart, which is a good start. Andrew Brewer struggled in the return game last week while filling in for the injured Stephen Simmons. A little more punch in the return game would be very helpful.
However, a few more touches for those guys in the offense would also add some balance to the offense. The passing game was explosive against Syracuse, and it wouldn't hurt to give the defense something else to worry about.
