Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is reported to be so eager to replace Louis van Gaal as Manchester United boss that he has written the Red Devils a six-page letter explaining why he would be the right choice and how he would transform the club.

However, Mourinho's agent, Jorge Mendes, has attempted to rubbish the story, writing on www.gestifute.com (h/t the PA and Daily Mail): "It does not occur to anyone that a coach like Jose Mourinho can write letters to clubs offering their services. It is absolutely ridiculous and totally absurd."

Mendes was responding to a report from Miguel Delaney of the Independent, who claimed the Portuguese manager wrote the letter after a poor string of results for United:

Though many among the United hierarchy were more open to appointing the Portuguese than they were when Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, the former Chelsea manager’s camp were made aware that there was a still a considerable faction at the club opposed to hiring him. The reasons are thought to range from Mourinho’s regular controversies, his style of football and his failure to nurture young talent.

The Portuguese is well aware of this thinking, and that is why he took the decision to write a lengthy document, emphasising just how much he wants the job and how he would be willing to adapt his style to meet United’s principles.

Delaney went on to claim Mourinho wants to offer the fans open, attractive football and even made a “forensic analysis” of the current team, outlining how he believes the squad could be improved and which signings could be made.

Per the report, plenty of people within the United organisation wanted to make Mourinho manager of the club back in 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but his tendency to attract controversy wherever he goes had some questioning whether he would be a good fit.

His subsequent spell with Chelsea was filled with both on-pitch success and even more controversies, including several public outbursts at officials and an incident where he appeared to shove a teenager on the street, per the Daily Mirror.

He was sacked by the Blues earlier this season following a dreadful start to the 2015-16 campaign, but with Van Gaal struggling at Old Trafford, links with United have never been far off.

Fans, like the Daily Mirror's Liam Canning, certainly seem to appreciate Mourinho taking the time to write the letter:

ESPN FC's Mike L. Goodman has some advice, however:

Van Gaal's position seems to be hanging by a thread following Saturday's Premier League loss against Southampton, and with few options readily available on the open market, Mourinho would be a prime candidate to replace the Dutchman should he be sacked.

His recent spell with Chelsea and fractured relationship with the British media make such a move a risky one, but there's no denying Mourinho is one of the most talented and successful managers in the world, and the Red Devils could use a change.
