Liverpool have reportedly had a massive bid rejected from Juventus for Alvaro Morata. They are also said to be considering a possible swoop for his compatriot Cristian Tello.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia) Juventus may consider moving on Morata in an attempt to fund a move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.
The piece suggested the Reds have had a €60 million (£45 million) bid rejected for the former Real Madrid man, but they may seek to prise the forward away again in the summer with Juve keen on the PSG star.
Naturally, getting Morata on board would be a huge coup for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds. Here’s a look at what he can offer:
Since leaving Real Madrid for Juventus, Morata has really come into his own. He’s a brilliantly rounded centre-forward, possessing fine touch, a turn of pace and excellent intelligence in and around the penalty area.
Morata has also shown a penchant for scoring in important games. In Juventus’ run to the Champions League final last season he netted in both legs of the semi-final triumph over his former club, Los Blancos, and then in the final too, with the Bianconeri eventually falling to a 3-1 loss.
As Bleacher Report’s Matt Ladson noted in the wake of Liverpool’s recent loss to Manchester United, the Reds could certainly do with a player who knows where the back of the net is:
Non goal scoring midfielders are Liverpool's speciality. As are non scoring forwards and terrible goalkeepers. https://t.co/LAYjK2vBqW— Matt Ladson (@mattladson) January 17, 2016
With this in mind, it’d be peculiar to see Juve cash in. After all, Morata, aged 23, is currently on an upward curve, and although Cavani remains a major force, given he’s 29 next month, it’s unclear how many years he still possesses at the very top level.
Klopp faces a dilemma when it comes to his forwards. Daniel Sturridge is regularly injured, Christian Benteke doesn’t seem the right fit for his system, Danny Ings is out for the season and Divock Origi remains rough around the edges. Potentially, that’s a very capable quartet in situ, but the German has been unable to appropriately utilise them.
What the Reds do need is some penetrative play from the flanks and Tello is the kind of talent who could bring that to the side. As we can see here, the Barcelona man, currently on loan at Porto, is refreshingly direct with the ball at his feet:
According to Tuttomercatoweb (h/t the Irish Independent), the winger was all set to join Fiorentina on loan with an option to make the deal permanent for £6 million, but Liverpool have stepped in late to make their interest known and the transfer is said to have stalled.
As noted by sports writer Dan Kennett, at the moment the Reds are not getting enough end product when it comes to their wide players:
Adam Lallana & Jordon Ibe now 0 goals in 36 EPL appearances this season, 5 in 54 in all competitions— Dan Kennett (@DanKennett) January 17, 2016
What kind of player is more important for Liverpool to bring in?
Tello could potentially change that. During his time with the Barcelona senior squad and the Portuguese giants he’s scored a total of 30 goals in 143 games. Granted, it’s not the best return for a wing forward, but the 24-year-old has been rotated in and out of the team at both clubs, never quite nailing down a regular spot in the side.
At the moment, he’d make a big difference to the Reds. The manner in which Klopp tries to get his team to play would suit Tello, as he’s a quick player who can convert defence into attack in the blink of an eye. For the winger, joining a club like Liverpool may be what’s required to kick-start his career into life too.
