Manchester United progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Louis van Gaal's side produced another underwhelming performance and had to rely on a 93rd-minute Wayne Rooney penalty to overcome the League One side.

The visiting fans started the game in good voice despite attempts to keep them quiet:

Snippet of the FA Cup audio package they are playing a tremendous volume to have it heard over SUFC fans. @br_uk

That was about as lively as it got in Manchester, as United struggled to entertain in another uneventful half:

Man United look like this when they attack today: 🐌 ⚽

— Dean Jones (@DeanJonesBR) January 9, 2016

Are United waiting to have a shot on target so they build up the element of surprise? "We've got them right where we want them, lads."

Watching Man Utd play + Listening to Michael Owen commentate =

'Snorey, snorey Man United'

— Joe Wilson (@joewilsonbbc) January 9, 2016

The fans weren't afraid of making their displeasure known:

Sheffield United fans singing Jose Mourinho. Adkins not looking that worried on the sidelines.

— Paul (@UtdRantcast) January 9, 2016

Van Gaal must understand why the fans are getting frustrated. League One side at home, two deep midfielders, 75% possession, one shot.

As United extended an unwanted record:

Bloody repeats.

To save time & stop the boredom why don't Man U agree to abandon all the first 45 mins at OT and just turn up for the second half? #0-0

— Alec Stewart (@StewieCricket) January 9, 2016

Thought I'd tune in for the 2nd half at Old Trafford....have I missed anything? Course I haven't!

— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) January 9, 2016

The next 45 minutes weren't much better, as the Blades stood firm against a blunt home attack:

Imagine having a season ticket 🙈 #mufc

Hey @adidas. You watching the game?

Scholesy's reaction to the latest failed #ManUtd attack...

— Jake Humphrey (@mrjakehumphrey) January 9, 2016

£150 million of attacking talent and it takes United 69 minutes to have a shot on target at home to a third-tier side.

Incredible ironic cheers fill the ground as Memphis takes a shot

— Paul (@UtdRantcast) January 9, 2016

This is utter comedy from #Mufc. If you can't be good, be funny.

— John Brewin (@JohnBrewinESPN) January 9, 2016

Big blow to the spectacle of the Europa League that Manchester United will play in it this season.

— Graham Ruthven (@grahamruthven) January 9, 2016

I hope you all cashed out..... Man Utd are officially awful.....

— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) January 9, 2016

Just as it looked as though fans would be punished with another 90 minutes at Bramall Lane, United nicked the win through a Rooney penalty in added time:

Rooney scores! Surely all doubts will be alleviated after a 93rd minute penalty winner against a league 1 side. Man United 1-0 Sheff Utd.

You'll struggle to find a less satisfying win anywhere.
