Junior Dos Santos Knocks "Cro Cop" Out Cold!

DALLAS - SEPTEMBER 19: UFC fighter Mirko Cro Cop (L) is stopped by referee after losing to opponent UFC fighter Junior Dos Santo (R) during their Heavyweight bout at UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort at the American Airlines Center on September 19, 2009 in Dallas, Texas. When the match up was first announced I felt bad for the MMA legend...  Boy was I right!  Dos Santos attacked Mirko and put him away early!

No way could Mirko Filipovic, clearly riding off in the twilight of his career, last against the hungry young lion that is Junior Dos Santos.  It had all just seemed unfair.

Mirko had a formula long ago proved unsuccessful in the octagon, and Dos Santos was a wrecking machine built to destroy the occasionally suspect chin of Filipovic.  Yet despite the exciting clash of heavyweights, we are left with major questions regarding Dos Santos and Filipovic.

Does Dos Santos really have the heart, stamina, and fortitude to last against top competition?  Does Mirko have any ability left in his tattered elderly body?

I mean, if the "Cro Cop" of old were still around, he would have given Dos Santos some counter-strikes to think about.  The "Cro Cop" that I know would still have been able to whip his tree-trunk left leg up like a flick of a finger.

If Noguiera really thought Dos Santos was a championship level fighter, shouldn't we not still be wondering if he could pick up his pace after two full rounds?  Wouldn't we have to see him actually face a talented striker capable of making him find difficult openings?

With a blow-out of this magnitude, I really wonder if the UFC wants to put together meaningful match ups.  What a tried a true promotional technique.  Have the not yet ready physical specimen crush the withered relic.

After this fight, Dos Santos still seems like a sheltered and unproven commodity and Filipovic is shown to be clearly too ripe to challenge even a 14-year old amputee girl.

With one crushing blow, that could have been predicted months before the actual event, Junior Dos Santos put away an MMA legend and left us all wondering what kind of fighters we were actually witnessing.

OK.  End sarcasm.  Great showing big guys.
