Post Huskie Pandemonium: USC Will Still Win The Pac-10 In 2009

Jakob Thais by Correspondent Written on September 22, 2009

Upset.

Upset 2009.

The epitome of just that was displayed this past Saturday when the Washington Huskies pulled off the unthinkable against the No. 3 USC Trojans.

After a big win against Ohio State the previous Saturday, Aaron Corp took the helm for the injured Matt Barkley against Washington.

All did not go as planned for the Men of Troy, and Washington pulled off the upset, 16-13.

Corp threw one of the worst games in the recent history of USC quarterbacks throwing for 13/22, 110 yards, and an INT.

And if you were watching the game on Saturday, you knew that his game was much more horrifying than that, throwing into double, triple, and even quadruple coverage multiple times.

After a halftime score of 10-10, the Huskie defense came out and played inspired football.

But the defense was not the key, Jake Locker was the key and by far the player of the game in this outstanding effort.

For the first score of the second half, with 9:53 left to play Erik Folk hit a 46 yard field goal to make it 13-10 Huskies.

A drive led by the USC rushing attack tied the game with a field goal with 4:07 left on the game clock.

At this point it seemed as if we were going to see overtime, or the USC defense step up and force a turnover.

But the tide was different on this overcast afternoon.

Jake Locker marched his Huskies 63 yards down the field, with just enough time left to spare for the game winning 22 yard field goal hit perfectly by Erik Folk.

The Huskies had pulled off the biggest win for their program in recent history, coming off of a 0-12 2008 season.

You would think USC would have learned.

They should of known after last years post-Ohio State disappointment.

With no credit taken away from Washington, USC should have won this game, and are much more talented and superior to the Huskies.

And while you can give me those cliche statements on how "1 player shouldn't make or break a game", I believe that if Matt Barkley were healthy for this game, USC would have won this football game. And would have won it big.

But he was not healthy and USC should have no excuses for losing this.

Corp should have been ready to play, and play much better than he did.

But, USC should not need excuses, they just need to play like they have before, which has won 7 straight Pac-10 titles for the Trojans.

USC has been in this negative situation before.

In 2006, the Trojans suffered the most shocking upset for the Trojans in a while for that time.

They were defeated by the unranked Oregon State Beavers 33-31.

They went on to win the Pac-10 once again that year in 2006.

That same year in 2006, they lost to UCLA in the last regular season game, yet they still went on to defeat Michigan in the Rose Bowl 32-18.

Both of these upsets were huge, yet the biggest upset against USC to date was played by Stanford in 2007.

The Cardinal shocked the Trojans 24-23 in The Coliseum.

And you ask what went on to happen in the Pac-10 that year? USC defeated the competition with a couple injury breaks from Oregon and went on to win the Pac-10. Defeating Illinois in the Rose Bowl that year, 49-17.

2008, last year. After a huge blowout win against the Ohio State Buckeyes, they went into Oregon State's house feeling on top of the world.
