Gary Williams, the much maligned coach of the Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team has received a one-year extension through 2013, the UMD athletic department announced today.

Williams’ current contract includes automatic extensions for achieving benchmark standards by the Terrapins both athletically and academically. This extension takes the term of his contract through June 30, 2013.

In other words, Williams’ 2009 recruiting class has four years to graduate, and if possible, make some serious noise in the tournament (a Sweet 16 appearance would be nice). It will be interesting to see if they make good on the ultimatum.
