Following its embarrassing Davis Cup defeat to Poland over the weekend, Great Britain has now been relegated to the third division of the competition.

The Davis Cup is the most prestigious team competition in tennis and Britain had been pinning its hopes on World No. 3 Andy Murray. Murray duly delivered by winning both of his singles matches, but he and Ross Hutchins lost their doubles match and Dan Evans lost both of his singles matches as Britain lost 3-2.

There is much speculation now as to whether Murray will still want to play in the Davis Cup with such a weak team and in such a low division. Perhaps in the long run it would be better if Britain experimented with younger players until they are good enough to move back up and once they do then perhaps would be the time for Andy Murray to put his class and experience to good use.

Britain will be desperate to upset the betting odds and move back to Division 2 next year.
