Federico Fazio has returned to former club Sevilla on loan, likely bringing his time with Tottenham Hotspur to an end.
Spurs confirmed the news via Twitter:
BBC Sport's Andy West couldn't help himself:
The 28-year-old never managed to impress fans or pundits during his first season at White Hart Lane, making 20 Premier League starts after completing a move from La Liga, per WhoScored.com.
While he showed plenty of aerial prowess, via WhoScored.com's Ben McAleer, his lack of athleticism made him a poor fit in manager Mauricio Pochettino's system. He has barely played in the 2015-16 campaign, as the Belgian duo of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have formed one of England's top defensive pairings.
Fazio isn't a bad defender by any means, but things just didn't work out with Spurs. Pochettino prefers players who feel comfortable on the ball and can cover ground quickly, whereas Fazio is a throwback defender who relies more on brute strength.
He found much success with that playing style in La Liga, and there's little doubt Sevilla will once again find a way to get the veteran involved. Fazio is still young enough to turn his career around, and if he can find some consistent playing time in the right system, his dreadful spell in north London will likely be forgotten before long.
