Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro stunned world No. 1 Roger Federer to claim his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open.
Del Potro, who was playing in his first Grand Slam final, had never beaten Federer in six previous attempts and the Swiss Maestrro looked to be on course for a 16th Grand Slam title when he won the first set 6-3 and broke early in the second set.
Federer served for a two sets to love lead at 5-4, but Del Potro broke back and sealed the set on a tiebreak. Federer once again took the lead in the match when he claimed the third set 6-4, but Del Potro fought back in magnificent fashion to win the next two sets 7-6, 6-2 and in the process claim the first Grand Slam title of his career.
The most remarkable fact about Del Potro's triumph is the fact that it is the first time in tennis history that a player has beaten Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the same Grand Slam event. If Del Potro can maintain this form then he has every chance of upsetting the Betting Odds and becoming the next world No. 1.
