Darrell Rasner: Bats, Pen Let Down Starter to End Five-Game Win Streak

All good things must come to an end and that's exactly what happened Monday as the Baltimore Orioles snapped the Yankees' season-high five-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory at Camden Yards.

The Bombers' offense, which had put up an average of 8.2 runs a game during the streak, sputtered against lefty Garrett Olson, managing just three hits in seven innings.

Starter Darrell Rasner was brilliant again, surrendering just one run in six innings for his fourth quality start in four tries this year, but Manager Joe Girardi pulled him after just 98 pitches and New York's bullpen couldn't keep the Yanks within striking distance.

Here are the grades from the Yankees' 6-1 loss to the O's on Memorial Day:

Joe Girardi, Manager: (C-)

98 pitches isn't a lot, and with Rasner pitching very well, I thought Girardi could've kept his starter in to throw the seventh instead of bringing in the terrible LaTroy Hawkins, who gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Other than that, there wasn't much more Girardi could do to get his offense going on this day.  He had his guys steal two bases, they just weren't hitting enough.

Johnny Damon, LF: (C-)

Damon HAS to try to score on Hideki Matsui's single to right in the top of the third.  There were two outs and Johnny is one of the fastest guys on the team.  Nick Markakis just made a perfect throw.

Derek Jeter, SS: (D+)

The Captain is slumping.  His 0-3 Monday makes him 1-21 since being hit on the hand by a Daniel Cabrera fastball last Tuesday.  Jeter did, however, walk and steal a base.

Bobby Abreu, RF: (F)

0-4 with a strikeout and two men left on base.

Alex Rodriguez, 3B: (C)

0-2 with two walks and a stolen base.

Hideki Matsui, DH: (A+)

I think it's time to switch Abreu and Matsui in the lineup.  The best hitter on the team is supposed to bat third, and after his 3-4 performance Monday, Godzilla is now leading the Yankees with a .331 batting average in comparison to Abreu's .288.

Shelley Duncan, 1B: (F)

Duncan needs to start hitting.  He went 0-4 with two K's, dropping his average to a woeful .164.  I'm still not understanding why he's batting sixth.

Robinson Cano, 2B: (F)

0-4 with a strikeout and two LOB.

Chad Moeller, C: (A)

Moeller helped the Yanks avoid being shut out for the fourth time this year when he hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth.  He also walked and was hit by a pitch.

Melky Cabrera, CF: (F)

Cabrera left four men on base while going 0-4.

Darrell Rasner, SP: (A)

Rasner's only mistake was the home run he gave up to Markakis in the sixth.

LaTroy Hawkins, RP: (F)

He's really earning that $3.75 million with a 6.08 ERA.

Jose Veras, RP: (F)

You hate to lose a game in which your number four starter gives up just one run over six innings, but this one is a lot easier to take after a five-game winning streak.  At least Syracuse took home its record 10th lacrosse National Championship Monday.
