Sundin To Receive Mark Messier Award
This Wednesday at a lunch in Pittsburgh prior to game three of the Stanley Cup Finals, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mats Sundin will be presented with the Mark Messier Leadership award.
The award is handed out to players who best displays leadership qualities both on and off the ice.
In 74 games this season, Sundin tallied 78 points, including 32 goals.
Leafs, Doug Armstrong Set To Meet
Earlier today Darren Dreger reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs GM search committee will meet with former Dallas Stars GM Doug Armstrong.
Armstrong is an executive who has been quite high on many people's list since he was relieved of his duties in Dallas earlier this season.
Nonis Wants Full Control
it appears Toronto's rosy little plan of having Dave Nonis come to the organization as a "paper" GM and placehold for Brian Burke isn't going to work out after all (and hey, who couldn't have seen this coming..hmm.)
The Maple Leafs will continue to stay in contact with Nonis, despite the fact he said any job he accepts in Toronto must come with full hockey authority, something I guess the search committee can't grant.
And so it seems, the higher ups are still pulling the strings, messing in affairs that they have no business being in.
Leafs Denied Contact With Nieuwendyk
The Maple Leafs were denied permission this weekend by the Florida Panthers to speak to former Maple Leaf Joe Nieuwendyk about a management position.
Nieuwendyk, unhappy with his role in Florida, resigned in April from the club, but is still under contract until July 1st. The Panthers declined the Leafs offer to talk to him early, and insisted they must wait until July 1st to speak with the three time Stanley Cup winner.
Nieuwendyk is looked at by many inside the Maple Leafs organization as a bright young hockey mind, with unlimited potential.
There is also the Cliff Fletcher connection, where Fletcher, Nieuwendyk, and even Maple Leafs adviser Doug Gilmour, all worked together in Calgary in the 1980's.
Nieuwendyk is apparently very interested in joining the Maple Leafs, but will have to hold his enthusiasm until the July 1st free agent period.
There is no question he is leaving the Panthers. They simply aren't happy about it, and aren't willing to do him any favors right now.
