NFL, Chicago Bears, Rex Grossman, Editorial

At this point it seems as if the Bears should bring back Coach Ditka, because there appears to be no bright spots whatsoever in the Bears' offense next year. The only bright spot on the whole team is Devin Hester, and one player on a 22-player team is not enough.

And to add to their troubles, they're apparently morons as well. They didn't draft a quarterback, and it looks as if they're going to place their team in the hands of Rex Grossman.

Poor Rex, he led the team to a Super Bowl, but even then you could tell that he just is not good enough. He's a good backup at best, but Chicago should have drafted a QB for the future, or at least be planning on one to draft next year.

Rex is just not going to cut it, and neither is Kyle Orton. Orton's best game was against New Orleans when he threw for 190 yards and two TDs in a game that didn't matter.

I like Rex as a person, but the Bears will lose 10 games or more next year with either Grossman or Orton as a starting QB, especially since they'll have to play the Vikings and Packers twice. Their last hope was improving Cedric Benson and running the ball. Well, it appears that he'll spend more time in jail than on the field as he morphs into the next Pacman Jones.

  1. Hey nice read. Comment my Michael Vick article with suggestions.

  2. I don't mean to discourage you as a writer, but this article boasts no support or logic. What are you basing this crap off of? Grossman has proven he can win in Chicago. Do you remember us going to a certain Superbowl in 2006 with him at the helm all the way? And who knows what Benson will do? I respect your opinion as a writer, but you've backed this up with 3rd grade logic and absolutely no facts! This is a joke.

What good would drafting a QB do? What so we can pay an unproven rookie $72 million like the Falcons did for Ryan and eat up the cap instead of improving the contracts of players who actually deserve it? Did you see JeMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn in their debuts last season? They got murdered! You can't throw a rookie QB into the mix at the snap of a finger. It doesn't work like that, my friend.

  3. The Bears are probably going to go 7-9 or 8-8 this season. I think that Benson has come into OTA's lighter, faster, and more determined because, which obviously shows that he hasn't spent all the off-season getting drunk on boats. It was probably the exact opposite and he just happened to get caught on one of the few nights that he actually did go out and have fun while he spent nearly every other day exercising and getting ready for the regular season.

As for Rex, I don't think that he has the consistency to take the Bears to another Super Bowl, but there really aren't any weapons around him to help him show his full talent. The Bears need to find some way to get a number 1 receiver, because right now they have a bunch of #3 guys that Grossman has to find against #1 corners.

But with Forte and a rejuvanized Benson along with a better offensive line, the Bears might be able to find some sort of luck offensively along with a good defense. Brandon Lloyd is a wild card because he might be great and has shown flashes of brilliance before being injured a lot last season.

Also, draft pick Earl Bennett could be great and has also shown that he could be NFL talent while at Vanderbilt, the 3rd round pick could be a big steal. Marcus Monk was a 2nd round talent before an injury knocked him out of his senior season. He fell to the 7th round and could be an even bigger steal than Bennett.

All in all, the Bears have a lot of wild cards and could be at the top of the NFL, but they could also be at the bottom.

  4. There's a common misconception that Super Bowl teams have to be "led" there by their quarterback. The Bears were led to the Super Bowl by Rex Grossman just as much as the 2000 Ravers were led by Trent Dilfer. Good defense and a consistent running game got the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006. Everybody saw what happened when the Bears needed to rely on Grossman in the Super Bowl—he crashed and burned. Say what you want about the conditions, but the Colts played under the same weather.

My early prediction: the Bears win six games and take Sam Bradford with their first-round pick.

  5. This is meant for Jimmy. You're a Bears fan. If you wish to keep Rex as a quarterback then good for you but I hope you enjoy seeing your team lose because its going to happen a lot. And thank you so much for your intelligent response, it was quite refreshing to hear how badly my article sucked and how it had no logic at all. Let me sum it up for you. Grossman sucks and so do the Bears. Changes need to be made at every position PARTICULARLY the QB and WR positions. And if you feel that the Bears should pay Kyle Orton more to suck then good for you, you're a moron.

    1. But changes don't need to be made at every position. A "good backup" is still a starter on most teams, quarterbacks are hard to come by. I stand by Rex for now, he is the best QB on the team. Could we do better, yes, but right now there is nobody available and there weren't any outstanding quarterbacks to fix our problems right away like you want.

  6. I agree with you I'm just saying that they should definitely be looking. The other guy was just being a jerk and had no point to his comment except to bash me.

  7. Until we have a shot at getting tebow rex is the best option we have. Article says we should have picked up a qb??? honestly who in the draft will fare better??? ryan?? lol did you even see him play at boston? imo hes an overpaid average qb. He possess no special talent. The only person i can honestly say i want in the qb spot for the future is Tebow. Maybe then we will have a decent running game.

  8. Rex is certainly a mediocre quarterback, but whether the Bears can get back above .500 will depend primarily on the defense returning to form. The core of the defense which was a turnover-forcing machine in 2005 and 2006 remains intact but the unit was unable to recover from injuries last season. Mike Brown and Dusty Dvoracek were out for the year after the first game, while Nathan Vasher missed most of the year and Tommie Harris and Brian Urlacher were bothered by chronic injuries. As a result the defense finished in the bottom third of the league.

The offense was terrible too and the team still finished 7-9. The team could tread water (placing Lovie Smith's job in question for 2009) or could improve to 9-7 or 10-6 and push for a playoff spot. Either Grossman or Orton can do that job assuming the defense returns to the top half of the league and the special teams stay special.

  9. Good article. Ignore the Rex lovers who criticize you - they have their heads stuck in their ___ or are simply stuck on dUMB.

Rex is no QB, and Orton probably isn't either. We blew our chance at a franchise QB to take an OL with short arms and a soft attitude. All of you folks who were cheering the pick of Williams number 1, let's see what you say when we continue to stink because no one respects our QBs.

By the way. the idea is NOT TO JUST GET TO THE PLAYOFFS - that just guarantees you a quick exit and a lousy draft choice. The idea is to WIN THE SUPERBOWL - this team was there AND REX FAILED.
