F1: What Can We Expect from the Next Formula One Game?

Last week, the Formula One Administration (FOA) announced that Codemasters has secured the exclusive rights to produce games from the Formula One series. Many people immediately came down like a ton of bricks on the FOA, asking why they chose Codemasters.

Some believe that Codemasters cannot produce a game near the quality of the Sony games. However, I disagree. Codemasters have a long history of producing some fantastic gaming titles. The self-titled gaming series from the late Colin McRae has become one of the most successful gaming series ever. With good reason.

The game produced an all new type of racing realism, something that previous games had struggled to achieve. A black spot in their history is the Race Driver series. The game has a very plastic feeling gameplay. It really does feel like an arcade game.

However, that was the past, and now Codemasters have announced that the new Formula One series will use their EGO Game Technology Engine. Codemasters fully believe that this will be the most realsitic Formula One game ever.

So, what would we like to see in the new game? Well, I'd though I would give some ideas, see what you think, and ask you for your own ideas.

Here we go:

  • A safety car mode. This is seriously needed. We've been asking for quite some time now, and it's vital that it's included if the game is to be a success.
  • Formation Lap and Reconnaissance Lap. Why can't we drive back to the pits after winning? We can't even drive back when a qualifying session finishes. Some will say this is boring, but then it's not realistic is it?
  • Proper damage mode. Why is it that when I have damage on and I slide into the walls in Monaco I can continue? Yeah, you do that in a Formula One car.
  • A post race press conference. You should be able to choose what you say to the journalists. Again, boring possibly, but real. That's the idea.
  • Get rid of the rev limit penalty. I accidentally run wide at at corner, cut across, have no power for six seconds, sometimes more. How the hell is that realistic? So stupid.
  • Freak rain. I mean seriously sudden. Not James Allen telling us there are clouds overhead ten minutes before it rains.
  • Red Flag situations. If a big crash occurs can we have a red flag? I mean, I had a 20 car pile up at the Nurburgring, and they just disappeared. What the hell?
  • Can we have a hard mode? I mean a hard mode that is actually hard. It's just too easy. Simple as.
  • National Anthems. Come on, it's not hard is it?
  • Make overtaking harder. It's so easy. Drivers can hardly use the slipstream to their advantage in real life, and yet I can use it from 300 metres away. Silly.
  • Actual race performance. What I mean is, the cars lift off halfway through a flat out corner, whereas I don't. So I simply glide past. Not realistic.

So, have I missed something that you would like included? Tell me then.
