Baseball News and Notes: Pitchers Duel in Atlanta.

Michael HicksSenior Analyst IMay 23, 2008

The two best pitching staffs in the National League, and maybe even in baseball, face off this weekend when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the Atlanta Braves for a weekend series at Turner Field.

The Braves staff boast the NL's best ERA with 3.42, with the Diamondbacks right behind them at 3.56.

Doug Davis will take the mound for the first time since being declared cancer free, on Friday against Jo-Jo Reyes.

The Braves are coming off a sweep of the Mets and are closing in on the NL East leading Marlins.

In the AL the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels have a first-place showdown, ending on Sunday Night. The Boston Red Sox start off a 10 game road trip in Oakland.

Thursday's Notes:

  • Mike Lowell and J.D. Drew both hit Grad Slams Thursday Night as the Boston Red Sox beat the K.C. Royals 11-8.
  • Ken Griffy Jr. hit homerun No. 598 in a loss to the San Diego Padres.
  • Don't look now, but with a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks the Florida Marlins are leading the NL east. Starter Andrew Miller threw seven scoreless innings while striking out  a career-high nine batters.
