Spanish side Almeria have been rocked by the news that midfielder Fabian Vargas suffered a fractured fibula and damaged a ligament in his left ankle during Colombia’s 2-nil defeat of Ecaudor on Saturday.

Vargas was injured after finding himself the victim of a terrible challenge by Ecuadorian striker Pablo Palacios, the striker recklessly fouling his opponent and falling awkwardly on Vargas’ standing ankle moments into the second half.

The 29-year-old, who joined on a free from Boca Juniors during the summer, is now expected to be out for three months after initial fears suggested that the midfielder would need a year on the sidelines to recuperate.
