Alisher Usmanov has purchased more shares in Arsenal Football Club, increasing his stake to 23 percent.

Usmanov continues to creep ever closer to the 30 percent stake required to mount a takeover bid.

Usmanov's fortune is estimated to be in the range of £5.5 billion—more than enough to improve a squad.

But is his help needed?

Arsene Wenger is famous for plucking promising youngsters from obscurity and moulding them into superstars. Players like Petit, Vieira, Ashley Cole, Anelka,  and even Henry to an extent were transformed under the manger's tutelage, and helped propel Arsenal to domestic triumph.

The fact that Wenger had a £50 million transfer budget this summer and chose NOT to spend it proves that Arsenal doesn't have to outspend the competition to succeed.

In cutting ties with Henry and Jose Reyes, Wenger was able to do more with less money. In came Eduardo Da Silva, a Brazilian-born Croatian with an amazing goal-scoring record, for £10 million. Wenger also shelled out £6.25 million for Bacary Sagna, a French right back on the fringes of the French international squad, and on deadline day bought Lassana Diarra from Chelsea for a bargain price £2 million.

With the addition of a few youngsters unknown outside Scandinavia, total expenditures came to just over £20 million.  Proceeds from the sales of Henry and Reyes are believed to be roughly £24 million.

Instead of using the Arsenal board like a cash pump, in other words, Wenger actually made a £4 million profit while improving the club after a disappointing season—a feat virtually unheard of in the Premiership.

Add to this Arsenal's hot start and the fact that they've just been named Britain's richest club, and the truth is obvious:

Arsenal are in great hands—and to invite unrest and disruption with an ownership change would be madness.

Arsenal's motto is "Victory Through Harmony." Everything is smelling of roses at the moment, but Usmanov is used to getting what he wants.

The major shareholders on the board—Fiszman, Edelman, and Bracewell-Smith—need to put their tin hats on and wait him out.
