Sean Sherk was removed from the UFC 104 card yesterday due to a shoulder injury allegedly suffered in training. More details are starting to emerge, and things definitely aren't what they seem.
Sherk was picked to take a random drug test by the CSAC, and was supposed to fly to California on Wednesday morning to provide a urine sample for testing. He also had to have his license renewed for California, since he'd let it expire.
Sherk never showed up for the test. When the UFC learned of Sherk's no-show, they informed the commission that Sherk was injured in training and would be pulled from the card. He was replaced by Josh Neer.
Because Sherk had allowed his license to expire and wasn't currently licensed by the commission, he won't be suspended for missing the scheduled drug test. This situation mirrors the recent controversy with Nick Diaz, who refused to take a drug test before the Aug. 15 Strikeforce show and ended up being pulled from the card.
It's a little early to make accusations against Sherk. Perhaps he really was injured badly enough in training that he couldn't make the flight for the drug test. But the story has a familiar ring to it, especially given Sherk's history with performance enhancing drugs.
