Oh, September. When guys named Gathright, Tazawa, McBeth and Woodward are placed on the active roster.

The Red Sox have one of the best farm systems in baseball. September call-ups chronicle the future of the franchise.

This is a list of potential players the Red Sox could call up in September.

If you think I've missed anyone, leave me a comment, and this article is listed in the order of which position the players play (catchers is first, infielders are second, outfielders are third and pitchers are fourth).

C—George Kottaras

Kottaras's job was virtually stolen by Victor Martinez, but he'll see some playing time now that he's up with the big club, likely catching Tim Wakefield.

The Scarborough, Ontario, native has a .224 average with one home run and nine RBI. He has an OBP of .303 and a SLG of .376 (OPS: .680) in 36 games this season for the Red Sox.

IF—Chris Woodward

Woodward has been a career backup, and his promotion creates a logjam at the once notoriously weak shortstop position. Woodward, along with Alex Gonzalez and Nick Green.

Woodward has appeared in five games this season for Boston, getting no hits in four at-bats. But, Woodward did get one walk, putting his on-base percentage with the Red Sox at .429.

OF—Joey Gathright

Gathright was acquired as sort of a Dave Roberts-esque type player. He was acquired for a player to be named later from the Baltimore Orioles (he didn't even play a single game for the Orioles).

Gathright, 29, has one stolen base this season, with a .214 average with no home runs and no RBI this season. His OBP was .267 and his slugging percentage is .214 for an OPS of .481.

Gathright is yet to play a game with Boston.

OF—Brian Anderson

Anderson is who the Red Sox acquired for Mark Kotsay (a trade Theo Epstein probably regrets now). Anderson has played in a grand total of three games for the Red Sox this season, hitting .167 (or 1 for 6), with no home runs, no RBI, no walks and three strikeouts.

In 2009, combined with both the Red and White Sox, Anderson hit .236 with two home runs, 14 RBI, with an OBP of .316 and a slugging percentage of .314 for an OPS of .630.

OF—Chris Carter

NEW YORK - APRIL 03: Chris Carter #54 of the Boston Red Sox bats against the New York Mets on April 3, 2009 at Citi Field in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. The game marks the first time the Mets play in their new ballpa

Carter is projected to be a career back-up, if he's in the majors for an entire season.

Carter has played in 4 games this season for the Red Sox, going 0/4 with one RBI. Carter's AAA stats include a .282 average this season for Pawtucket, along with 15 home runs and 59 RBI. Carter's on-base percentage is .347 and his slugging percentage is .442 for an OPS of .789.

Reddick has already made his major league debut this season, appearing in nine games, getting 32 at bats with a .188 average (or 6 for 32), belting one home run and knocking in two RBI.

Reddick should serve behind Gathright and Anderson as sort of the sixth outfielder for the Red Sox.

P—Junichi Tazawa

Tazawa is currently with the GCL Red Sox, as Boston management demoted him after his brief call-up with the big club.

In five games with Boston, Tazawa went 2-3 (including that game winning home run to Alex Rodriguez against the Yankees for his major league debut) with a 6.65 ERA with an opponents batting average .371 with a WHIP of 2.03 in 21.2 innings of work.

P—Michael Bowden

Bowden has been up and down in the majors. This season, Bowden has appeared in just two games, going 0-0 with a 15.75 ERA. He gave up eight hits and seven runs (all of them earned) in four innings of work this season. His WHIP was 2.75.

Despite his shaky start this season, Bowden could provide stability to the bullpen, and prove his worth to the management.

P—Hunter Jones

Jones has already made his MLB debut, and could be a future closer, for a team other than the Red Sox. Jones appeared in eight games this season, threw nine innings of relief work, and had an ERA of 8.00.

Jones gave up 10 hits (including two home runs), but struck out seven. Jones also has opponents batting .270 against him, with a WHIP of 1.56.

P—Marcus McBeth

McBeth hasn't been formally added to the active roster, but he hsa been on the 40-man roster the entire season.

In AAA Pawtucket this season, the reliever went 2-2 with a 2.62 ERA with three saves in 65.1 innings of work. He had a WHIP of 1.19.

P—Felix Doubront

Doubront has been the ace of AA Portland's staff this season, and he, like McBeth, is yet to be formally called up to the big leagues, and is yet to make his major league debut.

In AA Portland, Doubront went 8-6 with a 3.37 ERA with an opponents batting average of .252, with a WHIP of 1.42.
