Someone needs to break the silence…
...though what is there to say? Didn’t the look on Terry’s face say it all?
When he pulled his head off of Tal Ben-Haim's shoulder—eyes still closed, jaw clenched, forehead veins pulsing—didn’t that blurry-eyed look say it all?
In the salty, weighted mixture of rain, sweat, and tears that poured from his weary eyes were the crumbled dreams of a defender, an attacker, a father, a son, a leader, motivator, spokesman, gentleman, and friend.
The streaming flood of heartache and fatigue showed the human side of a man who has not only worn the Chelsea name since his youth, but who is the Chelsea name—the spine, the backbone, the soul.
Like a work of art, painted across his canvas were the angst, disappointment, letdown, and realization of billions of supporters across many continents. Of a Chelsea nation, of an entire squad, and of a lone Captain. The Chelsea Rock—and with it, the Chelsea dream—had shattered.
I’ve never been a fan who was so blinded by blue that I was left unable to admit when Chelsea was the weaker team. This season, our loss to Tottenham wasn’t a fluke—they wanted it more. Our loss to Barnsley was justified—our opponents earned it. And squeaking by Middlesbrough was nothing short of a gift. But being able to acknowledge worthier opponents invites distress and dissatisfaction. It leaves the door open for “should haves,” “could haves,” and “what ifs,” that ultimately swings back and smacks you in the face, when a win is unjustly corralled from the ring above your head and yanked from underneath the grave, slippery ground.
To lose a match that was never ours would make it easier to point fingers and lay blame. But to lose a cup that we deserved, to outperform our opponents, to repeatedly hit the woodwork, to let them skate by on penalties alone and lose this cup that we deservedly earned the right to hoist makes the match all the more poignant. The loss may be the same, but the hurt is monumentally different.
It is singular, it is outstanding. It is an exclamation point on a season that, on paper, reads as nothing more than a series of almost, so-close, and not enough.
It was an almost Carling Cup title that Tottenham stole away. It was a so-close in the points race that let Manchester narrowly take the Premiership. And it was a not-enough, 6-5 penalty kick score that again let Manchester United marginally triumph for the UEFA title.
It is a harsh reminder of history repeating—of a similar 1994 4-0 FA Cup unmerited loss in the same pouring rain to the same red-shirted opponent.
But the fact is, a season is more than just a piece of paper with recorded scores, wins and losses, goals and fouls. A season is more than just a piece of paper with tabloid reports, with staff changes, with hastily scribbled player uncertainties.
A season is a collection of emotions, pep talks, and desire. It is the summation of unity, of rebuilding, of growth, all in the face of instability, injury, and even death.
Our 2007-08 season can be described as nothing short of spectacular. We watched a team weighted by criticism and sceptics rise from the ashes adjoined by the hearts on their sleeves. To crumble would have been expected, but for our Chelsea boys, it also would have been too easy. No, this season certainly was not easy, for players or for fans. But, in the true Chelsea spirit, it was thrilling, electrifying, inspiring.
The '07-08 dream may have ended, but the Chelsea flag flies high. After all, there is no better trophy to hoist.
Through rain or shine, victory or defeat, the blue flag endures, and with it, the proud history of a remarkable club.
In July 2007, Real Madrid’s Christoph Metzelder told World Soccer Magazine that John Terry is a communicator and organizer “who obviously cares deeply about his club.” Coach Avram Grant resonated these thoughts and referred to Terry as a “bionic man.”
Chelsea fans have always known both. It takes true strength of character to step up confidently as the fifth shooter (as echoed by Frank Lampard in his post-match interview), and JT did so without hesitation.
His slip-up was exactly that—a slip-up. The ground was soaked—nothing more, nothing less. He is human, after all.
And so, for tonight, we must be content to let our Rock be human. We must let him publicly weep, deny interviews, and crumble into the ground. The harsh rain, in fact, made Terry seem a bit closer to God, to a success unjustly measured by a lone victory, now washed away into the Russian soil. Our hero may have fallen, but that’s the great thing about heroes.
They rise.
We must allow him, and the entire squad, to grieve—but we cannot grieve for them. We must be here, waiting, with flags flying, seats filled, and arms wide open, ready to embrace our boys when those tears are wiped away. They have put in the hours, done their work, proved their worthiness as players and as men. Now, it is their turn to rest, and our turn to work. Let us, the true blue and white army, stand by their glory and point towards the stars. Let us lead the march until our boys are ready to start the steps themselves towards next season’s dreams.
After all, there will be another match, another season, and even another dream—a rehabilitated one. Let us help our soldiers rise to meet it with grace and confidence.
In those tears, Terry managed to encompass it all—the player and club and fans, the match and season and history, the despair and let down and second best.
The outpouring of tears feeding the ground will spring a new season of rebirth and renewal. Not to do over, but to make right. To repaint the canvas.
They will be there, and so will we.

You are a credit to the spirit of Chelsea!
Next time i get to Nevadas I may even pop a blue umbrella in your pint for your sterling work LOL.

God motivational article but i do believe that second best is not good enough.I mean why did JT TAKE THE PENALTY ANY WAY WHY NOT KALOU.i MAY SOUND HARSH BUT I AM DEEPLY AGGREIVE AT THIS DEFEAT.WE COULD HAVE MADE INJURY BUT DIDNT BECAUSE OF THE SELFISH GLORY RIDDIN JOHN TERRY.ANYWAY THANKS ALOT JOHN FOR LOSING CHELSEA THE EUROPEAN CUP.

Bradley, know what your talking about...Kalou, while a great young player, is not a great PK taker. Besides, Terry doesn't make the line-up, Grant does..Know what your talking about before you open your mouth. Great article btw, I couldn't agree more

good article, but chelsea won one half. they didn't outperform united throughout. disappointed in lampard, saying chelsea dominated from 30 mins on. unprofessionalism at it's worst.
from about 1 month ago
Hi Michael? I strongly believe you were watching a totally different final. There is no way anyone can doubt Chelsea's dominance at largely crucial stages of the 120 minutes and even the start of the penalties. It was a clear mistake that United had to win.

this is the brilliant report dedicated to John Terry
he will definitely comeback from this nightmare !

very emotive peice. but i dont think it is at all fair to the players that won the trophy to say they didnt deserve it. thats absolutely ridiculous. you write emotively about a club and a man you obviously have some sort of genuine feeling for and spit in the face of the same type of fan who exists in support of the opposition. chelsea played well in the second half, but still needed giggs to not hit his shot as well as he perhaps could have and terry to clear off the line. it could have been 3-1 at half time for gods sake what game were you watching.
i have been a united supporter for years since i was lucky enough to visit old trafford as a kid and at the moment john terry missed i cheered as any supporter does. but i admire the man no less, terry is a legend and i am sure as player he will have more highs and more lows.
in the game there are winners and losers and chelsea lost.
maybe abramovich can buy it next year.
from about 1 month ago
My only response is just to say that I certainly do not spit in the face of any fan who exists in support of the opposition. After all, there was no trash talking involved here - no name calling or, in my opinion, disgracing. I happen to have a great deal of respect for supporters of other clubs, provided they have a clue what they are talking about and are not just hopping on the ___insert club name___ band wagon.
That being said, I do have a genuine feeling for the club - as a supporter, don't we all? I think Lampard jumped the gun in saying that Chelsea dominated from 30min on.... but I DO think that Chelsea completely dominated the second half, and, even statistically speaking, had more close opportunities to finish it up. How many times did Man U hit the wood? All I'm saying is I felt Chelsea wanted it more and, in this particular match, were more deserving of a W, which, if you read my article carefully, you'll note I do not happen to say all the time.
As for John Terry, well, most Chelsea fans have a genuine feeling for him as well. I happen to be a massive Joe Cole fan - as any of my Chelsea loving friends can attest too - perhaps with my ravings about Wright-Philips or Lampard in close second. I am not JT's #1 by any means, but as a supporter and as a human being I crumbled when I saw that look on his face. It truly encompassed it all, which is all I am getting at with my thoughts. Yes, you are right, in the game there are winners and there are losers, and this time, Chelsea lost. I'm not saying Man U sucks or doesn't earn their own victories. I'm saying that my Chelsea heart is crushed, specifically because I truly felt that Chelsea was the over all dominant team, and the final score doesn't reflect that.
The League Cup and Carling Cup are the same things; you meant the League or the Premiership.
Gavin Peacock may have hit the bar in 1994 but to describe Chelsea as the better team that day is, quite frankly, a little ridiculous.
sorry one other thing, chelsea did not deserve to win. how can you lose and deserve to win unless someone cheated? did someone cheat? no not that i saw. (except joe cole when he dived in front of uniteds box in the second half).teeheehee, i cant help but wind people up im sorry.

do you ever read what you've written? A mixture of imbecile and provocative comments, nothing else.
I am so happy you lost. United deserved it on the night - they created the better chances ( so what if you hit the woodwork) and they deserved it because the are narrowly better than Chelsea as the Premiership proves. They also played far superior opposition on the way to the the Final.
Finally - the best team in Europe, the champions of theit own domestic league both last season and this season won the European Cup. No one can argue with that.
from about 1 month ago
A lot of Chelsea fans are upset about the game last night you say we spit in your face but havnt you just spit in ours. Statistics show we had more chances but statistics also show we didnt pull them off. Nobody can say that we didnt have the passion or the skill we were brilliant and i am PROUD of my team. However going to penalties show how close this game was and so respect must be given to both sides it was a fantstic match. JT did nothing wrong he slipped and to blame him for our defeat would be ludicrous he wasnt the one to get a red card, but i wont be bitter about Drogba because he has helped us many other times this season. Your team deserver do win the premiership, but last night we equalled you and in my eyes overtook you in spirit. I am devastated we lost but i am happy for Man U on the aniversarry of the Munich disaster. I respect your team please respect ours. Comments against you are only because we are hurtin and because emotions are high I think you could respect us fans a little by taking our opinions with a pinch of salt. Manchester won what more do you want. Boys Yo were brill last nite, all of our boys were including manU's

Good day! Quite honestly I was sorry for the guy and that was before I saw the well publicised event when he spat on Tevez . That speaks volumes about the guy who was as arrogant as always- demanding high pay berating referees and downright insolent. Cant blame him he thinks Abromovich's millions can buy sucess. Sucess comes with the honest desire to win not just to copycat (try Kenyon). SHOW some HUMILITY like Ryan GIggs.
Good read Stephanie, I can't agree that Chelsea deserved to win, it was an even game overall that neither deserved to win or lose, and thats why penalties must ensue (or are replays fairer?)
As a Liverpool fan I wanted Chelsea to win, and thought they would when Ronaldo missed, I think you have summed up the feeling of a penalty shoot out defeat very well, us English fans have regular experience!

It's my understanding that the goal Lampard scored to level the match was a lucky garbage goal, the crossbar made up for it in extra time.
I wouldn't say chelsea completely outperformed man u. the first half seemed to have been dominated by man u with the exception of the chelsea goal.
either way, both clubs put up a classy performance, i think it is safe to say that both will be back next year at top form looking to battle it out again, chelsea will get its rematch, maybe not in the final, but at one point or another, i think these two sides will meet up on the pitch in another uefa cup game. and will spend all next season battling for the premiership.
GO MAN U!!!

Stephanie,
I want to thank you for such a fantastic piece of heart felt expression. I am a hugh Chelsea Fan living in Indiana. Your article was not only eloquent, but it left me touched, moved and inspired to accept our fate. Hopefully, we can strengthen our team next season. I believe that Chelsea will be revamping the team a little bit. I can't wait for us to be in the position to play beautiful football with high goal scoring results. We need to be able to score more goals, keep leads and hold the ball. Defensively, we have filled a hugh void we had at right back. Midfield needs some work. Some Egos will have to buy in to the sharedvision of teamwork and commpromise. We definitely need more quality strikers that will actually play and exceed expectation. We need a quality substitute goal-keeper. And depending who you ask maybe a New Coach to change the tactical and overall culture of the team.
Grant is ok, maybe he needs time, change takes time. Then again maybe as good as he is as a coach, just maybe he is not the alignment that fits the expectation and deliverable Our dear Chelsea requires.
Please keep writing. I love soccer and I love Chelsea FC.

It was a tale of two halves. To say one side deserved to win more than the other seems to be unjustifiable.
All you Manure fans keep flapping your jaws. Anyone who actually plays the game and understands it knows full well that winning on PKs is not a good win, and definitely not a good loss. You barely squeaked by on the Prem and barely squeaked by on the CL. Good for you. As far as who was the best team last night, you were definitely the better team for the first 45 but not the rest of the match including AET. You sat back and rarely created anything. So saying you were the better team during that match is laughable at best. Ronaldo's PK could describe how you played the second half.
Personally I would have rather lost 2-1 than 6-5 on PKs. Again, its a cheap way to win but there you are. Manure gets the silverware... good for you. Remember you couldnt beat us in the Prem in 07/08. Chelsea was unbeaten in the Prem in 2008, you cant say you were. Remember Chelsea fans we were written off after Mourinho was sacked. That including all of our injuries, the ACN taking some of our top players, more than any other team in the Prem, Chelsea was completely written off and assumed were going no where this season. Look where we went, the second to the last team to get knocked out of the FA, Carling, Prem and the glorious CL... not too bad for club that was "going no where"! Terry is the captain and is a far better captain than anyone in the Prem and the England NT. We will be back!
from about 1 month ago
mate you are kidding me, i play the game and have particapated in penalty shoot outs, generally they happen out of failure to convert shots on target. united had more shots on target therefore more realistic goal scoring opportunities. chelsea came second everywhere and second as we all know is first loser. what are you gabbling about unbeaten in the prem? i think you are in denial there bud. hitting the post is missing the goal and chelsea did it three times twice in the match and once in the shootout.
dont forget they needed an own goal to get to the final in the first place.
going nowhere..... where did they go? second, second, second, i think thats nowhere baby read it and weep.
from about 1 month ago
Wearing blue-tinted glasses eh there? United was the better team overall. You hit the post, fair play, but hitting the post MEANS that the ball was never going in. Besides those two, Chelsea had 1 shot on target, that's it. United had 5 shots on target, so thank Cech for keeping you in the match. Despite lagging behind during the second half of the match, United still maintained 55% possession thanks to their utter dominance in the first half marred by one moment of PURE LUCK for Chelsea, Lampard's goal. Needing a double deflection to even reach him and a slip from Van der Sar to score it, count your blessings. Then it took a fantastic head-on from John Terry to even get you into the shootout. You should consider yourselves lucky that you made it so far.

Great article. I'm a Liverpool fan who actually cheered for Chelsea during that match. The match could have gone so many different ways, but in the end, Man U was on top. I'll stay away from the "maybes" and "ifs" in hope that next time Liverpool wins Europe, Chelsea and Man U fans will let us revel in it.

I'm a United fan, but I don't think there's an opposing player that I respect more than John Terry. There's no question that he loves his team, his teammates, and being on the pitch. The injuries that he's suffered, so many prima donnas wouldn't bother rushing back from - he takes a licking and keeps on ticking like no other.
Had he converted that kick, he'd be a hero ten times over. As is, he's still deserving of all the respect in the world. He'll get back up again, and he'll keep on doing what he's been doing...and for that, he'll always be someone I hold in high regard.

Truly a great article Stephanie, every word seemed like it was handpicked:) Terry is a broken man, and Chelsea a broken team, but like all great teams, their Phoenix will rise from the ashes, and they'll be hungrier than ever.
This whole event was built as United's final. Even on Sky sports it was all about destiny and how United would breeze past a haphazard Chelsea side who were all looking to leave amongst in-house fighting.
United had the game for the first 35 minutes then it all changed apart from Terry's AMAZING headed clearance Chelsea dominated, for some games i guess, well, they just aren’t meant to be.
Today, well, it seems the fall-out is heading Drogba’s way with speculation that he is to be sold whether he wants to leave or not (BBC Sports)

Stephanie, that was very eloquent and deeply sensitive.
It's such a shame that Chelsea's performances on the field are, by stark contrast, so crude, inelegant and downright brutish. Let's face it, old Terry boy is, sadly, a thug and a loser.
Let's just hope that Capello acknowledges his clear inability to captain the national team and hands the armband to a far more deserving individual. Someone with inspirational leadership skills, a proven winner - Rio Ferdinand.

And therein lies one of Chelsea's main problems; Micheal's use of the words "....AND WITH A VENGEANCE!!!!". Just as you attack other players on the pitch - that was Drogba's third assault on Vidic in as many games - you just want to attack people. You even kick the crap out of your own players on the training field. As Avram said you're really just a bunch of violent thugs.
It's football not world war three, you moron.
chelsea did not outperform united, their equaliser is no.1 contender for luckiest goal of the season.
united shot two times at chech when it was easier to score and terry cleared almost with the back of his head.
call it outperforming, i call it desperate shooting, accept for lampard's,drogba's and essiens effort,i don't count in ballack pushing ferdinand against the ball forcing a save from vds. so it's three big chances vs. three big chances and if you look at the statistics, both teams had about the same amount of shots ON target, utd better passing rate, more possession, territorial advantage.
so let's call it quits, only one team can win the competition, this time it was united and they deserve it.

John Terry lost the final for chelsea through his own egotism, the man is a thug, and he is also the reason drogba got sent off, considering he started that row with Tevez over what was quite honestly nothing.
Manchester United deserved to win on the night, the lampard goal was a piece of luck, and you wasted your oppurtuinty's, the red devils also came closest to winning the match i believe when ryan giggs nearly scored, before John Terry headed it off the line.
Rio for captain!

that's football! enough "could have, would have, should have" fact is we scored 6 of our penalties, you scored 5, you may have hit the woodwork twice, you could hit it a milion times, doesn't mean you deserve anything more. In the premiership you didn't even win your last fixture at home to bolton, we went away to wigan (anpother team you failed to get 3 points against) and we won 2-0. If you look at United, what makes us a great team was the mistakes we made, we could afford to make, Ronaldo missing a penalty which WOULD have put us 2-0 up and more than likely got us a result against the hammers, against barca which COULD have put us in a better position for the second leg, and of course in moscow which WOULD have prevented sudden death from even happening. Our "nearly's" were irrelivent, we still took home the silverwear, and they were both against the Chelsk. Personally, bring back Mourinho, 6 trophies... 3 years ;) In the League It could have been closer, we didn't even need the win, a point would have sufficed. If you flick on sky sports news you'll see the beloved chelsea placed 7th on average crowd attendance. tisk tisk. And as for terry, he's over-rated, and a dirty player, everyone saw the spit at Tevez. Hey-ho justice was done in the end i suppose =P UNITED!
Great peice Stephanie,
Just to say to Lix above, that the reason Chelsea are only 7th in the average crowd attendance is because the staduim only has a capacity of 42,055, that's slightly over half what you have at United. Look again at the crowd capacity tables and you will see that they have almost a full house at every match. I should know cos I go !!!! Lix, you also need to get your facts straight although the score was 6-5, you scored 5 pens and Chelsea scored 4 pens. Because it was 1-1 after extra time the score became 6-5 !!!
I honestly think that the hateful remarks from Man U supporters is because we rattle them, afterall from being written off in September, United had to fight for the 2 trophies they got. Which teams before have taken them to last game in Prem and CL FINAL TO PENALTIES !!!!The CL final was a evenly balanced match, and when a team wins on penalties, it's sheer luck!!! and they know their luck almost ran out that night.
Penalties is the worst way for a game to be decided for any team !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amusing Trish, very amusing. As you say, Man Utd did indeed come back after a difficult start to win with style, scoring many more goals and conceding far less than you or anyone else and that, you'll agree, is the sign of a truly deserving winner. I'd suggest that the only ones "rattled" are Abramovich and that clown Kenyon, hence the sacking of Grant and the current fire sale. Back to square one guys.
Wrt attendances this season, Chelsea was 4th behind Spurs, with an average of 98.4% (dropping back from 2nd last year). Arsenal were highest with 99.4%, Man Utd were 2nd with 99.3%. If it was on actual figures, only 786,549 visited Stamford Bridge but an astonishing 1,438,136 visited Old Trafford, almost twice as many revealing that, in the overall scheme of things, Chelsea is very much a junior player in the Premiership.
Anyway, keep smiling!
People, people, people...... The best thing about Chelsea not winning and therefore having never won the Champions League is that they are a nothing club. They regularly can't fill their horrible little stadium for Premiership games unless it is against one of the other big teams. The fans share the same genetic gene pool as Millwall FC - rioting on their own streets. They have no history to speak of and could well have been languishing in League 2 with Leeds (scum) had it not been for the deep and dubious pockets of Abramobitch.
They tried to buy success with cash when United's success has brought them cash.
As for John Terry........Your working class hero?......
Is this the same John Terry who , in the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, along with Chelsea team-mates Frank Lampard, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jody Morris were accused of drunkenly mocking American tourists at Heathrow, stripping naked, laughing and vomiting.
Having paid his share of the £130,000 fines imposed by Chelsea, Terry was then involved in a 1.30am fracas at London's Wellington nightclub in 2002 in which a doorman was injured.
He is engaged to a beautician and in their first seven years together is said to have strayed at least eight times, but has always been forgiven (I wonder why? £150k a week maybe) This character synopsis doesn't include the amount of times he has urinated in a bar.
John Terry has made his own bed through his on field attitude (his self-styled 'hard man' image, his haranging of referees, his sly and dirty fouls (like kicking Torres whilst he was on the ground during the semi) etc) and unsavoury off field activities. He has not positioned himself to elicit any sympathy, so he cannot expect any.
Do me a favour.
Go out and buy a squillion quids worth of players. You will NEVER be a United or even a Liverpool or Arsenal for that matter.
Now quit your blubbering.

Chelsea fans should be the least to be calling anyone Glory Hunters when your club just started being successful just 5 years ago. I've been supporting United for 17 years now and in my country nobody supported your club until they won their first English championship in 50 years.
Jamie you gotta be kidding me talking about lucky when Chelsea should've been down 3-0 at the half. If you wanna talk about luck talk about Lampard's goal which was deflected by Rio right into the path of Terry, Tevez's diving headerwas brilliantly saved by Cech and carrick blew the follow up by kicking the bal straight at Cech.... i guess that's not luck.
So if Chelsea were to be down 2-0 who knows what could've happened? We probably would've scored 1 or 2 more goals easily, so to say we were lucky is just ridiculous.
I understand being angry that you lost the cup because i would've felt upset but being biased is just unacceptable.
You can spend millions of millions of dollars to buy players but you can't buy the history that United have!

Stephanie,my opinion is that Chelsea deserve to win the match because they have more and good chances than the red devils but i will simply say that is how fate as write it.But i will still insist that that match is the most exciting and intriging UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL i have ever watch in my life.Anyway without winning any trophy this season i will still be a true chelsea fan and that should applies to other chelsea real fans.People will be surprised when we will burst out and show our worth and our capabilities in the next season. Now most importantly let me plead that chelsea should please,i mean they should sell or offload our dear newly bought striker Nicolas Anelka because i believe the guy is of no use in chelsea rather than causing problems for the team
