Nate Diaz vs. Melvin Guillard: Is This Really The Main Event?

Can someone please explain to me how Nate Diaz and Melvin Guillard got top billing for this card?

This is not an intriguing matchup. Neither fighter is in the lightweight title picture. Neither of these fighters is even in the upper half of the division. Neither of these fighters is likeable for that matter. Neither of these guys should be representing the sport in a main event on cable television.

I think it is a good matchup, but not main event worthy. I would argue that it is a questionable main card fight altogether. There is nothing, other than a place in the UFC, at stake for these two fighters.

Diaz will need a least one more win against bottom half competition before he can even take the next step and fight a gatekeeper again. Guillard is in a little better situation but is still at least two wins away from getting a crack at a top ten guy.

As much as I love the UFC I think that making this fight the main event is a step in the wrong direction. The main event should be a position that is held by top contenders and champions. Not a fighter coming off two straight losses who can barely formulate a coherent sentence.

The fight that should be the main attraction features undefeated Gray Maynard and fan favorite Roger Huerta. This fight is between two fighters looking to position themselves so a potential title shot.

A win for Maynard would likely put him into the discussion; while Huerta would still need one more quality win.

Either way, Maynard vs. Huerta is the more attractive fight and it is a travesty that it is not the main event.
