Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, I’m so glad you could attend (Credit to Emerson, Lake and Palmer.)
Here is my pre-season Bugeatersteve’s NCAA Bottom of the Barrel Rankings for 2009.
As many of you may be aware, this is my third year of covering the teams that never get covered, unless it is at the receiving end of a Texas, Florida, or other top 10 beat down. So without further ado, here is my initial preview of my five worse teams heading into this season starting of court with number five and counting down, just like Casey Kasem used to do it.
Number 5 – North Texas State Gang Green
Finished the 2008 season 1-11 after going 2-10 the previous year so this could be a breakout year. Don’t count on much with a non-conference schedule that includes a trip to Alabama. With a colander for a defense, I think three wins might be asking too much.
Number 4 – Iowa State blows
Mmm, mmm good as Campbell’s like to say, too bad same can’t be said for ISU. Coming off an impressive 2-10 season, had their head coach bails speaks volume that’s for sure. I see another 0-8 Big 12 season and running the table for 0-12 is not out of the question.
Number 3 - Idaho Vandals
Coming off a 2-10 season with seven offensive and nine defensive starters sound promising doesn’t it? Hmm, think again that defense gave up 42 points and 472 yards per game. Head coach Robb Akey is 3-21 in two seasons here and if he wins three games this season it wouldn’t be an accomplishment it would be a miracle
Number 2 – SMU ponies
Finished at 1-11 last season this school is the reason why the NCAA has never used the Death Penalty again as it did live up to its name. With June Jones at Head Coach, they do have a slight chance of making some noise in the future, especially with a schedule that includes Stephen F. Austin and last season’s number four Washington State.
Which leads me to my No. 1 team…
Number 1 – Washington muskies
The only perfect team last season (either winning or losing) at 0-12, the first Pac 10 team to ever accomplish this task. I can’t in good conscience remove a team from No. 1 until they prove that they don’t belong. This team was one of the worse offensive teams ever last season ranking 100 or worse in categories such as rushing, passing, total offense, and scoring.
Well there you have my previews of the dregs of the NCAA, stay tuned for the next rankings after play begins.
