A brilliant goal you wont have seen: Kelly Smith (England) vs Russia

There are several parts of the title above which may prove to be untrue.

Many may have already seen this goal as English TV stations try and shine the light on the 2009 Women’s European Championship. Secondly, in this author’s opinion anyway, labelling this goal as brilliant feels somewhat dangerous as it seems all too easy to apportion some of the blame of this goal on the Russian keeper, Elena Kochneva.

That said, talking down Kelly Smith’s audacious 45-yard belter that proved the English match-winner against Russia on Friday night would also be a disservice.

Collecting a Russian clearance on the halfway line, Smith, the star of the England women’s team, controlled the ball instantly before whacking a superb long-distance effort straight over the opposing keeper’s head.

As a bonus, we also have a second wonder-strike to show you from the meeting between Ajax and AZ Alkmaar youth last week. Ajax ran out 3-2 winners, however it was Jan-Arie van der Heijden’s fantastic 40-yard howitzer which left an indelible mark on the match.

Picking up the ball just inside the AZ half, the 21-year-old midfielder took just one touch to steady himself before letting rip with a swerving, bending left-footed bullet the tore into the back of the net.

Jan-Arie van der Heijden’s brilliant strike can be seen here.
