Roar Or Prrrrr....With Tiger The Answer Is Easy

His given name is Eldrick. He is known as Tiger. We should change it to Kitty. Tiger Woods is all "media’ed out." Those were his words to the New York media after round one of the Barclays from Liberty National in Jersey City, New Jersey. I can’t make this any clearer…he and his act are a total joke. All "media’ed out”!!! Is he serious!?!?!

In the number one media market in the world? Tiger can’t hack it? I've said it in regards to Michael Jordan...and it couldn’t be more true with Tiger. His blessing is his curse. What makes him so great to the game of golf is exactly what makes him detrimental to the future success of the sport.

Speaking to the media is part of his job...plain and simple. You may not like it...you may even dread it from time to time. Tough! It is part of the territory when you make millions of dollars both on and off the course. "Smell Ya Later" to the media is simply unacceptable.  But the PGA tour commissioner can do nothing about it. His "boss" is Tiger Woods...and Tim Finchem must bow down to Tiger and never appropriately exercise the power he has been given.

Woods lives in a very sheltered world. Strange to say considering he is easily the most recognizable athlete on the planet. But think about it. He never is out of his element. He never goes to a place he can’t control...and never finds himself in places when a "Man I wish I wasn’t here right now" would suffice. Until this week and Liberty National in Jersey City, New Jersey.

He hates the golf course, the city, the media, etc. And why do you think that is? And why do you think he has "always" hated playing in New York? Because he can’t control the situation. It is very much like Rick Pitino, John Calipari and Nick Saban. Big time college coaches...thirsty for not only more money, but the chance to prove they can dominate on the pro level. Then they find out they cannot control the situation...they fail miserably and head back to school. Tiger is the same way. He cannot control New York. He certainly can control Grand Blanc, Michigan and Akron, Ohio and Charlotte, North Carolina. But New York, not even close. So he only plays New York when he "has" to like for US Opens...and Fed Ex play-offs. Which coincidentally had the rules changed so that Tiger would "have" to come to New York instead of skipping the first of four play-off weeks. With the original rules in place from several years ago, Woods would have almost certainly skipped the Barclays.

His thumb sucking, not getting his way attitude leads me to my next point. And it’s a question that has been asked for the past decade...ever since Tiger changed golf forever. How would Tiger do against Nelson and Hogan and Arnie and Jack in their hayday? The answer is the same as the reason he hates Liberty National. He would fail miserably against those giants of the game the same way he has so far and will always fail at Liberty National. He hates the course because its tight, bumpy and hilly which puts a premium on straight drives. All you have to do is watch Tiger for two minutes to know that he is far from the straightest driver of the ball. He wants to bomb it...find it...play it without "penalty," make his birdie...win by 10...and talk to the media in a condescending manner. He basically killed Liberty National before ever setting foot on the grounds. And why? Because he knew instantly from the descriptions of the course...that he couldn’t win there. Yes...I’ve just predicted he won’t win.

He is currently even par heading to the weekend eight shots back. Might as well be 18. His bitter childlike attitude this week is “bush league” and far from what is to be expected from professional golfers.

It’s all very much similar to Major League Baseball and the difference between playing in St. Louis and New York. One newspaper, one beat writer and no boos from the Cardinal faithful. A prime place for a Tiger-like ego maniacal "softy." New York has endless papers and beat writers as well as ruthless, non-forgiving fans. Hey Eldrick...enjoy St. Louis! It's all yours! Here in New York, your nothing but a "Kitty!"
