According to WWE.com, Smackdown! superstar and current Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio has violated the Wellness Policy. He will be suspended, effective Sept. 2.
This is not a good time for the WWE to lose a top star and merchandise seller, as they are set to lose Jeff Hardy on Friday nights as well.
My Take
Many should know that I am not a fan of "Rey Rey," as I find him extremely stale. Mysterio, a la WCW, was entertaining. WWE's Mysterio? Not so much.
For the past two months Mysterio was embroiled in a feud with the young upstart Dolph Ziggler for the IC title. Mysterio was able to fend Ziggler off at the past two pay-per-views and retain the title (much to my chagrin).
I am quite interested to see what the WWE does now with the title.
The fact that the suspension is scheduled to begin Sept. 2nd leads me to believe that the WWE will have him drop the belt at next Tuesday's taping of Smackdown!. I'm hoping it is to Ziggler.
Or do they set up a tournament that might lead up to the Breaking Point PPV?
Wrong Move on WWE's Part
What I don't like is the fact that they are delaying the suspension. Why not just have him start now?
This just seems like something that makes people continue to dismiss professional wrestling. Any other sport would have the star begin serving their suspension immediately.
This isn't like a pitcher in baseball throwing at a batter and having the chance to appeal the suspension. Manny Ramirez, outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers MLB team, was suspended earlier this season for 50 games when it was determined that Ramirez had taken human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a banned substance. Mysterio should be on the sidelines right now, not next Wednesday.
Societal Issues
Mysterio, Hardy, and other celebrities are constantly fawned over by their adoring fans. Young children look up to these folks and idolize them.
Do I like this practice? No.
I've never sat back and wanted to be like anyone on television. I didn't claim that any celebrity was a role model. I have always felt that role models should be those in the home. If not in the home, someone who is real. Not someone of the celluloid variety.
