War Eagle More Than Words
The road to the loveliest village this fall will be inundated with RVs, vans, trucks, cars, covered in orange and blue, filled with expectant fans ready to shout Warrrrr Eagle, a most versatile cry. It is the battle cry for the Tigers of Auburn, who are also known as the Plainsmen. War Eagle is also a greeting among fans of the Tigers. It matters not who you are if you are wearing your colors you will be war eagled in the most unlikely of places. War Eagle is not only a battle cry, it is a greeting, a term of endearment among fans.
I have had total strangers give me a War Eagle on the golf course, at the grocery store, in the parking lot, at church. I have been War Eagled in New York, Houston, Vegas, New Orleans, Atlanta, Florida to name but a few places. War Eagle identifies who we are, a proud family, dysfunctional at times but none the less a family.
In ten days the family will suit up and despite the differences pull together and once again chant Warrrrrrr Eagle as the pigskin flies through the air. We will laugh together, cheer together, and even cry together. We will rejoice in victory and writhe in defeat. And we will do it together as all families do.
This year not much is expected by others as to what the representatives of our family will achieve. But you can be assured of one thing, this family will stand tall win, lose, or draw. We will put our best foot forward each Saturday as the beloved Plainsmen take the field. Their effort will not be daunted by the lowered expectation and jeers of opposing fans. They will proudly represent a very proud family.
War Eagle!
