Do The Spurs Really Have a Chance in The Finals?

Jason OMay 19, 2008

The Lakers have the the MVP of the league, one of the best coaches of all time, and perhaps the best bench in the league despite not showing it in the playoffs. All these things have got them to the Western Conference Finals, and should get them to the NBA Finals.

When looking at the stats the Lakers look much better than the the Spurs, but that is obviously not the case.

The Spurs are the defending champs, they have the best power forward to ever play the game, a great young point guard in Tony Parker and that ball of energy Manu Ginobili. They are going to take some beating.

But, its not something I would put past the Lakers at all. As stated above, they have the MVP, they have one of the best ever coaches, and if they decide to turn up on the night, they have one of the top benches in the league.

The only things statistically the Spurs are doing better than the Lakers, is rebounding and shooting a slightly better percentage from the free throw line.

For the playoffs the Lakers are scoring more points, passing more assists, forcing more steals, blocking more shots, committing fewer turnovers and shooting a better percentage than the Spurs.

A lot of people would see this and instantly assume, the Lakers are going to trample over the Spurs, this I assure you will not be the case.

Some people would argue that the Spurs are to old to win the championship, and are to old to play until June.

That is all rubbish.

With age comes experience which helps a great deal on and off the court. They have experience on the court, to get them through games without the pressure getting to them. The also have valuable experience off the court, they were in this situation last year and know how to manage their bodies, and know how to prepare for a long playoff series.

That's one excuse people have been using, when giving reasons why the Lakers will win the series.

But at the end of the day their is only one reason.

The Lakers are a better team, it's as simple as that.

If they play how they have been, and don't crumble under the pressure of finals basketball, they will come out on top of this series and be playing either Boston or Detroit in the NBA finals.
