MMA: Why Are You Watching?

MMAjunkie.com's "Inside MMA" poll suggests that fans overwhelmingly do not want to see a fight between GSP and Anderson " The Spider" Silva. Why not?

MMA, Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre

Why would so many MMA fans vote down a fight between GSP and Silva?

According to MMAjunkie, "tens of thousands of people voted and surprisingly most them voted against the match-up."

While this fight may be considered a fantasy match-up that puts a lot at stake, it won't be impossible to make happen.

With GSP handing Matt Serra a pretty terrible loss for the Welterweight Title and Silva being the Middleweight Champ, the fight is not as far of a leap as some fantasy match-ups.

A safe assumption is that GSP would insist on Silva dropping weight so the territory is fair.  Silva is in good enough shape to take that step so GSP would not have the added complication of more weight on his opponent.

Whoever wins this fantasy fight could stake a claim for being one of the most dominant champions in UFC history—move over Hughes.

Not to mention the money and notoriety coming with this matchup would be great for the organization and the fighter's pockets.

A lot of people do not give GSP enough credit.  Silva is one of those unstoppable fighters. He finds his opening and he takes it ruthlessly.

A fighter has to have a sense of self and of his opponent to fight as Silva does, but where is the credit for GSP?  Why do so many fans think it would be the end of GSP and the beginning of Silva's quest for glory?

This fight would only mean good things.  Credit would be given to both guys for what would most likely be a battle of wills. And the victor could claim his place among the UFC greats.

What is so wrong with that?

  1. Perhaps we aren't looking for a single champ, like back in the Royce Gracie days.

I for one don't care to see it because they are great champs of their own weight classes. I don't necessarily like watching fighters jump around in the weight classes as though they have something to prove.

And as far as the weight debate, I don't see Silva cutting. GSP is known for walking around at light heavyweight size and cuts on a regimented program. I could see Silva arguing that it is easier for GSP to fight up than for him to fight down.

Perhaps there is something about Silva that goes above and beyond the "best pound for pound fighter". maybe being excellent at two things is better than being great at four things.

  2. people probably dont want to see it for the same reason I dont. I have a feeling Anderson might run thru GSP and I dont want that to happen. Id rather GSP do his thing, and if Anderson is bored and cant find any challeges I think he should look up and not down in weight. I want to see Anderson fight Rampage because I feel he has the style that gives Rampage the most problems, as knees from the clinch have always been a problem for Rampage.

  3. I agree, this would a great matchup, and the fantasy fights are the reason why this sport is doing so well, if fighters resist fights just so they can retain their crown, or so some fans can say that "ther fighter" still top dog in his division, is simply wrong, true fighters are willing to fight anyone to prove that they are the best, and both GSP and Anderson Silva have said and proven that they are the two top fighters in the world, honestly I don't know why GSP and Silva haven't begging for this matchup I hope it happens soon

  4. I think most of the champs (GSP in particular) have plenty on their plate in their own divisions to take care of before they go doing catchweight superfights.

  5. i've read an interview with anderson silva not too long ago and he said he would never consider moving weight classes. Silva cuts a lot of weight to fight at 185 and likewise for GSP at 170. It would be easier for GSP to move up.

    1. my only point is, and i speak from eight years of experience, it is a lot harder to fight up than it is to fight down.

  6. Jen, I think James is your soulmate; don't let him get away. Jon, I am solidly with you. Aside from the fact that I am praying for Jen to go up in weight to fight Gina Carano, I believe that there are weight classes for a reason. While 185 is thin right now, 170 is not. Maybe Penn should play the hero he so wants to be and go to 185 and humble Anderson Silva before trying to take on GSP who has welterweights standing in line. Wanderlei should go to 185 and fight Anderson for a really great fight.
There are so many more possibilities than taking Georges out of a stacked division just to appease Jen and James blood lust. First things first . . . like Jen vs Gina.
