Shortly after Smoltz cleared waivers after being released by the Boston Red Sox, John Smoltz signed with the St. Louis Cardinals for about $100,000 for the rest of the season.
GM John Mozeliak said that Smoltz could possibly start Sunday at San Diego, he may also get a few more starts in the rotation.
Smoltz did not really care about makings deals right now, he is just excited for another opportunity to play.
Smoltz will be the fifth starter and may be used in relief out of the bullpen. Teams that showed interest in Smoltz were Detroit, the LA Dodgers, Texas and Florida. Smoltz feels most comfortable pitching in the NL.
In Boston, Smoltz was 2-5 with an 8.33 ERA in eight starts for the Sox .It was his first time pitching in the AL.
Smoltz is expected to be with the Cardinals by tomorrow in San Diego.
In his career, Smoltz is 212-152 with a 3.32 ERA and 154 saves in 21 seasons in the majors.
This shows how great of a player Smoltz really is. He is so passionate about this game, even at 42, He just wants to go back out to the mound and pitch, leaving his unsuccessful time with Boston behind him.
He thanked Boston for giving him a chance this season and declined their offer to have him pitch in their minor league system.
