After a pitiful stretch of 10 games for the Cardinals, in which they won just 2, Adam Wainwright takes the mound to hopefully ease the pain. It won't be easy, however, as he is facing newly-acquired Matt Garza and the red hot Tampa Bay Rays.
The Cards, who started out so promising have stumbled recently, and as the ace of the staff, Wainwright needs to make sure the Cards fall no further behind the division-leading Cubs.
At this point in the season, it could be where the tides turn, as the Cards have lost six full games on the Cubs in the last ten. In most situations this season, except his last outing, Wainwright could be counted on to have a quality start and that is exactly what the Cardinals need.
It has been an unfortunate scenario: when the Cards bats are hot, the pitching runs cold, but when the well runs dry at the dish, the pitching is spectacular. Wainwright has seen this example in full force, especially his May 7th outing, where he pitched 7 scoreless innings, only to be done in by the bullpen and its Jason "Blowsenhausen" plague.
Luckily for the Cardinals, with Isringhausen moved, or relegated as I'd like to call it, to the DL, the bullpen will perhaps have a smaller gap at the end of ballgames.
But it all starts with the 26-year-old Wainwright. If he is snapping off his curveball in Carlos Beltran fashion, and locating his heater, the Cardinals should get one in the W column. If not, the Cards will be searching for answers to avoid a sweep as they give the ball to struggling Kyle Lohse for Sunday's affair.
It starts with you, Adam. Throw a gem, and get us out of some deep water, because after all, we still have a good chance of floating.
