On virtually a weekly basis we bring you some form of punch-up or mass brawl which has broken out at a football match, more often than not in South America. Yet today we can bring you something a little different as an under-14 match between Argentine giants Boca Juniors and River Plate descended into violence and disorder over the weekend.
The unfortunate scenes came about after the referee awarded a late penalty to River together with red-carding a Boca defender. The decision sparked a wild and unruly response from Boca’s coach Roberto Pompei, who angrily tried to storm onto the pitch in an effort to hurl abuse at the match officials for their decision.
Although Pompei was ultimately held back, the bad blood quickly transferred onto the teenagers, as soon a full blown punch-up was underway with punches and kicks appearing all over the pitch as the two teams began tearing into each other. Several of the kids were left sprawled on the floor after taking a beating in the brawl.
After a series of red cards, order was finally restored and River went on to convert the penalty and draw the match 2-2.
