The Wilsons squared have been torn asunder. Doug Wilson, San Jose Sharks' G.M., announced Monday that coach, Ron Wilson, would not be invited back for another campaign in the 2008-2009 season. Ron had been with the team since mid-season 2002, and had become the all-time leading coach for the franchise with 206 wins, and a winning percentage of .535 during the regular season.
The problem was post-season.
Ron led the team to a Western Conference final in 2004 and Western Conference semifinal appearances the past three seasons. However, the straw that broke the camel's back occurred this year following an arduous seven game series against the Calgary Flames.
The Sharks fell behind the Dallas Stars 3-0 in their semifinal conference series. They proved competitive by winning the next two before succumbing to the Stars in a fourth overtime period in Dallas. It was an epic game six. The contest showed the Sharks' mettle, but proved to be Ron Wilson's final page of a final chapter with the Sharks.
The Wilsons remain chums and Doug Wilson applauded Ron's efforts in bringing success to this team, currently the Bay Area's most successful franchise. Fans that attend the Shark Tank in an area that basks in sunshine three hundred days of the year and yet exhibit a rabid love of their local icy cold blueliners certainly know that the administration, including one Wilson still intact, will continue to strive to reach the threshold of Lord Stanley.
