Alabama fresh off of a successful regular season that included victories over arch-rivals Auburn and LSU were expected to be too much for the Virginia Tech Hokies, instead the Crimson Tide was completely outplayed by Frank Beamer's Hokies before a sell out crowd.
Even though Alabama had lost to Florida months ago it appeared to many that Alabama had turned the corner under their popular Head Coach headed into his third season at Alabama.
Those thoughts were the last thing on Alabama fans minds as the filed out of the stadium stunned and disappointed by what they had just witnessed.
The Hokies took the lead and never looked back as Alabama sputtered on offense, scoring only seven points on Virginia Tech's stingy defense.
Yes, Beamer Ball is alive and well in Blacksburg Virginia.
Alabama's problems were not just isolated to its offense as the Hokies proceeded to dismantle Alabama's defense seemingly scoring at will. The Hokies ran roughshod scoring 38 points on Alabama's overrated defense.
Alabama's players left the field stunned as did Alabama fans who had made the four hour trip to their neighboring state to see what was supposed to be a great start in a new beginning for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The final score 38-7 did not tell the whole story as the team and coaches appeared unprepared and overconfident judging by the way they played.
The fans seemed resigned to the outcome as many left early to beat the traffic. "We were completely outplayed and looked unprepared" one dejected fan said as he headed for the exit.
By now many Alabama fans are probably cussing me and wondering why I would write such an unbelievable fairy-tale that is so full of blasphemy and lies, but I swear every word is true.
The year was Dec. 29, 1998, the place was Nashville Tennessee and the story is true in every detail.
Alabama was matched up with Virginia Tech in the Music City Bowl. Many thought it was a sure win, instead Alabama was run out of the stadium by Frank Beamer's Hokies, and Alabama fans left disappointed and stunned.
I can still remember Alabama fans wondering why Alabama was matched up with with the Hokies for a bowl game back in 1998. What the heck was a Hokie anyway?
Alabama found out what a Hokie was that day, they were Alabama's worst nightmare!
I remember Alabama fans asking the same question last December when they found out the Tide was playing Utah in the Sugar Bowl last January, what the heck is a Ute anyway?
Alabama fans found out the hard way what a Ute was that day.
"Remember the Music City Bowl, and remember the Sugar Bowl too." That should be the battle cry for this game with Virginia Tech in Atlanta on Sept. 5, 2009.
Never take any opponent lightly, especially a excellent team like Virginia Tech. You can bet the Hokies will show up ready to play just like the Utah Utes did last January in New Orleans.
Alabama had better prepare for Hell because that is what Virginia Tech is going to bring to the Georgia Dome.
So Crimson Tide fans, tighten your chin strap, show up early and let your team know you are there. Let them know you want to see the Alabama team you saw in the first 12 games of 2008, not the team that showed up in New Orleans on Jan. 2, 2009.
A football team feeds off of their fans and unlike Dec. 29, 1998 in Nashville or Jan. 2, 2009 in New Orleans, the Alabama Crimson Tide nation had better show up and be ready to rock the house, because I guarantee the Frank Beamer's Virginia Tech Hokies will!
Remember this Alabama fans, the Hokies are ranked in the top 5 by many polls, and if Alabama beats them it would be considered an upset by many.
They are good, very good, if you don't believe me, just walk around with your chest stuck out, sit on your hands and eat your popcorn when you get to the Georgia Dome and see what happens.
