Rising UNC junior power forward Alex Stepheson will transfer from the North Carolina basketball family after asking for a release from the program due to a family illness.

It has been rumored since last season that Stepheson would transfer from North Carolina after he missed a couple of games last season to return home when his father was sick.

Stepheson, originally from Los Angeles, California, scored 237 points and grabbed 252 rebounds in his two seasons with the Tar Heels.

He was named defensive player of the game twice this season, both coming in the Heel's NCAA tournament games against the Arkansas Razorbacks and Washington State Cougars.

"My family is dealing with some health challenges at this time and as a result I have made the decision to transfer to be closer to home," said Stephenson.

"I wish to thank the UNC fans for all their support and encouragement. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to be a Tar Heel and I wish the program the best in the future."

It has not been reported what schools Stepheson is now interested in and where he may end up playing his last two years of college basketball.  Which ever school he ends up with will be getting a player with a lot of upside and potential going into the future.

  1. As a Tar Heel fan, I'm sad to see Alex go. He has improved so much in just two seasons and was just a monster on the boards and on the defensive end coming off the bench this past year.

I wish his family the best and will certainly keep up with his career. Obviously, basketball plays second fiddle here, and I think I speak for all of Blue Heaven when I we wish the best for Alex and his family.

    1. I hate to see him leave too, he was raw talent wise but he had a lot of potential and I actually expected him to start over Thompson next season. His defense and energy was something that you cant emulate and will be missed next season. Its look rough right now if everyone stays in the draft.

    2. If the 'Heels could afford another loss, the frontline is the right spot. Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller are on the way and I was actually worried about everybody's minutes.

I think it's safe to say that Danny Green will be back. There's a good chance Ellington returns. Frasor's on the mend. The 'Heels will be fine.

  2. Bummer. Alex will be sorely missed.

  3. Alex would have been so good next year. He was one of those player who didn't quite get all the hype off the court, but could make a huge difference on the court. I'll be rooting for him wherever he goes, unless they're playing the Heels.

Matt you know how much I liked this guy's talent!
