MLB, AL East, NL West, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Omar Vizquel, Breaking News

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, there is a rumor circulating through baseball that the Red Sox have interest in Omar Vizquel. This doesn't make any sense, considering the Red Sox have Jed Lowrie, but a trade for a shortstop is possible.

Furthermore, Lugo is batting .285 in 35 games, so he is not playing terribly for them.

Vizquel is batting .385 in four games, but has started to slip over the past couple of seasons. Vizquel has a $5.2 million club option for 2009, but that will probably be bought out at $300,000.

The Red Sox may very well be scanning the market for a shortstop, but they wouldn't get serious until closer to the deadline.

  1. While I love Omar (who doesn't) I would not be too upset to see him go. He's a great presence in the locker room and does a superb job on the field. But we need to get younger and having Omar doesnt help that.

  2. It could make sense. For a contender like the Red Sox, Omar would make an ideal late-inning defensive replacement to help hold a lead. Don't let his current average fool you, he is no longer a real threat as a hitter. However, his defense is still at a gold-glove level despite his age. He's a magician out there.

  3. i don't think the Giants would let this happen. only if they got someone QUALITY in return, but the mentorship that Vizquel brings, as well as his torrid offense so far, is going to be extremely hard for the Giants to give up. I don't think it will happen.
