The Cubs defeated the Padres 4-0, behind a dominant performance by Ryan Dempster, who struck out 12 in 8 1/3 innings. allowing just six hits and one walk along the way.
The Cubs scored all their runs in the fifth inning, the first of which came off the bat of Ryan Dempster, who hit a single to bring in Ronny Cedeno. Ryan Theriot then hit a sacrifice fly which scored Henry Blanco, and the final two runs came in on a double from Derrek Lee which scored both Ryan Dempster and Alfonso Soriano.
The Padres' Greg Maddux pitched 4 1/3 innings during which he allowed all four earned runs on 11 hits.
With the win Ryan Dempster imrpoved to 5-1 on the season, and Kerry Wood picked up his eighth save of the season pitching the final two-thirds of the ninth.
The Cubs will host the Pittsburgh Pirates for a weekend series, Friday through Sunday. The match ups for the series will be Sean Gallagher vs. Tom Gorzelanny on Friday; Carlos Zambrano vs. Zach Duke on Saturday; and Jason Marquis vs. Phil Dumatrait for Sunday, to close out the Cubs' homestand.

Anyone want to throw out some predictions for the series against the Bucs? I kind've wished we were involved in interleague play, but I guess a record-booster series like this weekend's isn't too bad...

As far as the Pirates series goes Sam, I hope the Cubs aren't going in overly confident. The Pirates are playing a lot better than the last time the Cubs played them. Granted we have won six straight against them, and are 6-1 on the homestand, I hope it continues.
I think Dempster has been a very pleasant surprise to the starting rotation. I was skeptical of having him start early in the season, but sure am glad he's around now. Hope the Cubs can keep the hot streak going!
