This week the Cubs signed former foe and Cardinal star Jim Edmonds to fill a non- existent hole in center field. While the Cubs did not have an aged veteran in center until now, they are nurturing a couple of great young talents in Felix Pie and Reed Johnson.
While Jim Edmonds is an eight time Gold Glove winner and a four time All-Star, this season has shown his age. His batting is terrible, even for him, and is below .200. The Cubs already have one star in the outfield who has not produced enough this season in Soriano.
Another subject for controversy in this transaction is the fact that he is Jim Edmonds, and the Cubs have Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano, although he has matured since his altercation with (then Cubs catcher) Michael Barrett, has a history with Edmonds. Barrett and Zambrano were established teammates before their altercation, Edmonds and Zambrano are established foes. Let's see how far this goes. Last time the Cubs got rid of Barrett; let's only hope they choose to stick with Zambrano again.

this was such a dumb signing on the Cubs part...Edmonds obviously is not the offensive player he used to be, due in fact to his being 36 years old and his all-out style of play. Not only that, he looks to have lost a step...or two or three...on defense. Why the Cubs, who many think can be World Series contenders this season, would sign Edmonds leaves me pondering.
