Sergio Mitre has to go. He gets hit hard everytime out, left handed batters kill him, has'nt pitched passed the 5th inning, and he doesn't have the velocity that he needs to throw the ball where he's throwing it. Which is right down the middle of the strike zone and about letters high, and batters are just teeing off agaist him especialy lefties. He can't field the ball now apparently after a throwing error that could have turned into a double play. I know that you like him Girardi but it's time to part ways with Mitre, don't you think Joe?
He would need some stretching out but he could be the Yanks best option, even if it does weaken the bullpen. The Yankees still view him as a starter anyway.
Recently acquired from the Padres where he worked out of the pen and rotation. He doesn't have the best stuff but he couldn't be much worse than Mitre.
He most recently pitched for the Houston Astros before he was released. The Yankees signed him to a minor league contract last week. Ortiz has bounced around but was a solid pitcher from '99 to'04 going 99 and 45 with a 3.94 ERA over that span, but has not regained his old form since.
The Igawa expierement did not work out the first time but he has had a solid season at AAA Scranton going 9 and 4 with an ERA of 4.04 in 21 games started.
The right hander has also had a solid season at Scranton going 4 and 6 with a 3.42 ERA in 14 games started. He most recently pitched in the Majors with the Blue Jays and was involved in a benches clearing incident against the Yanks. He is already on the 40 man roster after being called up for one night and then shipped back down to Scranton.
The long relief pitcher out of the bullpen would not need much stretching out and has already started this year for the Yanks and did a good job starting in September last year as well. It would weaken the bullpen but that may be a sacrifice the Yanks have to make.
